India vs Australia, 3rd Test Day 3 stats wrap: Jasprit Bumrah's day out, Cheteshwar Pujara's dubious distinction and more

Pacer Jasprit Bumrah had Australia’s batsmen tied up in knots with his immaculate line and length, giving India the decisive advantage that withstood a second innings batting collapse in the third cricket Test on Day 3 at the MCG. At the end of day three, India, after bowling out Australia for 151 in response to their first innings total of 443/7 declared, took a 346-run lead. The visitors were struggling at 54/5 in 27 overs in their second essay but had the upper hand. AP[/caption] Called a “genius” on air by Australia’s former captain Michael Clarke, Bumrah’s career-best figures of 6/33 in 15.5 overs also made him the first bowler from the subcontinent to take a five-for or more in South Africa, England and Australia in the same year. It was a day when the Gujarat pacer achieved numerous milestones. We take a look at all the numbers from a topsy-turvy day where 15 wickets fell. - Jasprit Bumrah became the first Asian bowler to take a five-for in each South Africa, England and Australia in the same calendar year in Tests. - Jasprit Bumrah’s figures of 6 for 33 in the first innings of the Melbourne Test are now the second best for an Indian pacer in a Test innings in Australia with Kapil Dev holding the record — 8 for 106 in Adelaide in 1985. - No Asian pacer has taken more overseas Test wickets in a calendar year than Bumrah. He has taken 45 wickets while his team-mate Mohammed Shami is at the second place in the list with 43 wickets in 2018 in Tests. - Jasprit Bumrah has now taken 75 wickets in international cricket this year which is the third most by any player while the record is held by Kagiso Rabada with 77 wickets. - No Indian keeper has now taken more catches than Rishabh Pant (18) in a Test series. The record was previously held by Syed Kirmani (against Pakistan in 1979) and MS Dhoni (against England in 2014) with 17 catches each. - Cheteshwar Pujara became the third Indian batsman to score a century and a duck in the same Test in Australia. Vinoo Mankad (in 1948 at Melbourne) and Sunil Gavaskar (in 1977 at Melbourne) are the other two players to have done the same. - India’s No 3-6 batsmen added only six runs in the ongoing Test in the second innings which is the joint least for them where all four batted in a Test innings. This also happened way back in 1946 against England at Manchester. - India’s lead of 292 runs in the first innings was their third largest first innings lead in SENA countries in Tests. Their largest is 355 against England at Leeds in 2002. With inputs from PTI
