Senior India batter Virat Kohli could be omitted from the India squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup slated for June. The provisional squads for the showpiece tournament in West Indies and USA are to be submitted in the first week of May, and according to a report in The Telegraph, the Ajit Agarkar-led BCCI selection committee is gearing up to take some tough selection calls.
The report goes onto say that Kohli has not been at his best with the bat in T20s, but that perception could change if Kohli produces consistent and big scores in IPL 2024 that starts from 22 March. “It remains a very delicate matter and not many are willing to get involved,” a source was quoted as saying by The Telegraph, adding that Agarkar would take the final call.
The report adds that the likes of Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube have been backed to headline Team India’s T20 World Cup squad. Hardik Pandya, whose has been out of action for India since he suffered an ankle injury during the ODI World Cup last year, is also expected to return to the national setup.
Kohli had skipped the five-match Test series against England to be with his wife for the birth of their second child. Till date, Kohli has played 117 T20Is for India, and scored 4037 runs.
