The 15-member India squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup is set to be announced on Tuesday (30 April) following a selection meeting in Ahmedabad on the same day. The deadline for announcing the preliminary squad for the T20 World Cup is 1 May (Wednesday).
According to a report in News18 CricketNext, Captain Rohit Sharma, however, is unlikely to attend the meeting since he will be in Mumbai ahead of Mumbai Indians’ (MI) home game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in the IPL. Rohit, however, is expected to meet with BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar virtually on Tuesday afternoon. Head coach Rahul Dravid will also attend the meeting, although it is still not confirmed if he would trvel to Ahmedabad for the meeting or attend it online like Rohit.
“Yes, a meeting will take place in Ahmedabad on Tuesday afternoon. All selectors, coach and captain will be attending it,” a source closer to the developments was quoted as saying by News18 CricketNext.
Agarkar had met Rohit when Delhi Capitals hosted Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday. The former pacer witnessed the match from one of the commentary boxes in Delhi.
The report adds that the selectors could also announce travelling reserves apart from the 15-man squad. Although 1 May is the deadline set by ICC for all teams to announce their squad, teams will have time till 25 May to make changes to the original squad if needed.
India are in Group A for the tournament that will be held in West Indies and USA from 1 June. The Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue will begin their campaign against Ireland on 5 June, before locking horns against Pakistan in New York on 9 June. That will be followed by a game against co-hosts USA on 12 June, before concluding their group stage with a match against Canada on 15 June in Lauderhill. India haven’t won a major ICC event since the 2013 Champions Trophy. Last year, the Men in Blue reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup in India but suffered a six-wicket defeat to Australia in the summit clash in Ahmedabad.
