Mumbai: India cricketer Mohammed Shami was on Thursday booked under five charges — including rape and attempt to murder — by Kolkata police, two days after his wife Hasin Jahan accused him of domestic abuse and adultery, television reports claimed. Jahan registered an FIR against Shami and four of his family members on Friday.

The 27-year-old has been charged under Sections 376 (rape), 307 (attempt to murder), 498A (subjecting wife to cruelty), 323 (for voluntarily causing hurt), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

His name was also withheld from the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) latest list of contracted players pending investigations, ESPNcricinfo had reported.

The cricketer, a regular in the Indian Test team, had vehemently denied all charges levelled by his wife and alleged a conspiracy to defame him.

Earlier, reports had claimed that Jahan found Shami's phone, gifted to him by his Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Delhi Daredevils in 2014, hidden in his car and then discovered the chats on the phone which led her to believe that he was having an affair with multiple women.

Jahan said that Shami and his family members had been torturing her for over two years and had even threatened to kill her.

"Everyone in their family used to torture me. His mother and brother used to abuse me. The tortures continued till 2-3 am in the morning. They even wanted to kill me," she alleged.

"He even abused me and started beating me. All this continued after he returned from South Africa. He has been doing this for quite some time now and now I have had enough," she said.

"I gave him enough time (to rectify his ways) and tried to calm myself down but instead of accepting his own mistakes, he used to vent his anger on me and even threaten me, asking to keep mum for my own goodwill," she added.

The Facebook account from which the allegations were initially made has since been deactivated. Shami is was part of the India 'A' team in the recently-concluded Deodhar Trophy, and was retained (RTM) by Delhi Daredevils for Rs 3 crore.
