India vs Pakistan, Women’s Asia Cup 2024 match preview: Harmanpreet Kaur-led India lock horns against arch-rivals in their first match of the 2024 Women’s Asia Cup in Dambulla on Friday. This tournament acts as a crucial buildup towards the Women’s T20 World Cup that will be held in Bangladesh later this year.
The Women in Blue are coming on the back of a drawn 1-1 series against South Africa at home and will be the top favourites not just against Pakistan, but also in the tournament. India have won the T20 version of the Women’s Asia Cup three out of four times, while having clinched the title in the 50-over format in each of the four times.
Top-order batter Smriti Mandhana will be one of the India players to watch out for. She scored 46 in the first T20I against South Africa before scoring an unbeaten half century in the third match to guide her team to a 10-wicket win.
Among the bowlers, pacer Pooja Vastrakar was most impressive against South Africa. She finished with eight wickets in that series and will look to maintain that wicket-taking momentum in the continental tournament. Spinner Radhya Yadav was also impressive after she finished the series against South Africa with four wickets. She will form a formidable spin combination of herself, Deepti Sharma, Shreyanka Patil and Sajeevan Sajana.
Pakistan, on the other hand, have retained Nida Dar as skipper for the Asia Cup. The squad has still undergone an overhaul. Iram Javed, Omaima Sohail and Syeda Aroob Shah have not played any matches thus far this year but have been included along with the uncapped Tasmia Rubab.
