India vs New Zealand Highlights, IND vs NZ, 2nd Test, Day 2: Black Caps lead by 301 at stumps

Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin collect a maiden each as New Zealand reach 198/5 at stumps on Day 2, stretching their lead past 300. Tom Blundell reverse-sweeps his way to 30 with Glenn Phillips batting on 9, and the pair will be hoping to bat India out of the game by converting their steady partnership into a big one.

The day, however, belonged to Mitchell Santner (7/53) and Tom Latham (86), whose performances helped the Black Caps seize control on Day 2 and inch closer to a historic series win with a match to spare. And to think the Indians were in an upbeat state of mind after stumps on Thursday after bowling the Kiwis out for 259!

The Black Caps collect a boundary in each of the last two overs to motor past 150 with six wickets still in hand! Latham plays a delightful reverse sweep off Jadeja while Blundell hangs back and steers a length ball from Bumrah, who replaces Sundar in the attack, through the gap between slips and gully.

Drinks brought to the field at the end of the over, with New Zealand sitting pretty at 154/4 after 36 overs stretching their lead to 257!

Daryl Mitchell has been attacking the Indian spinners today quite frequently, but pays the price for a shot too many as he smashes the ball high in the air off Sundar’s bowling without getting the necessary distance for it to clear the boundary rope. Yashasvi Jaiswal charges forward from long on and completes a fine catch.

Sundar collects his first-ever 10-wicket match haul in Test cricket, with all of his wickets in Pune coming from the South End. NZ 124/4 after 30; lead by 227

Rohit Sharma turns to Jasprit Bumrah with the spinners doing precious little on the Pune wicket where Mitchell Santner had collected seven wickets earlier today. Bumrah is introduced after the Black Caps have already collected 76 runs for the loss of just one wicket in 17 overs on the same wicket that appeared unplayable earlier today, with Ravindra Jadeja leaking 10 runs in his third over with Young and Latham collecting a boundary each.

The Indian pace spearhead starts off with a couple of deliveries that nip away and beat Latham’s outside edge. Two off Bumrah’s first over. NZ 78/1 after 18; lead by 181

First bowling change of the innings as Jadeja replaces Ashwin, who has gone for 33 runs in six overs without collecting a wicket. Jaddu starts with a ball that turns away sharply, beating Young’s sweep. Ends up conceding a boundary in his first over as Latham goes for a reverse sweep that sends the ball past slip. Sundar continues from the other end and concedes just one.

The Black Caps, meanwhile, go past 50 with nine wickets in hand, their lead also in excess of 150. India will need a miracle to pull off a series-leveling victory from here.  NZ 58/1 in 14; lead by 161

Devon Conway (17 off 25) gets the marching orders as he misses a sweep and is hit on the thigh pad in front of middle and leg, leading to a successful LBW appeal from the Indians. Conway has a quick chat with Latham, and decides against using reviewing it.

Replays, however, show the southpaw got a faint under-edge, and would have still been at the crease had he taken it upstairs. Will Young joins Latham at the centre. NZ 37/1 after 10; lead by 140

Sundar might regret his decision to collect a boundary off Patel of the final delivery of the previous over instead of taking a single and keeping the strike as Jasprit Bumrah is trapped leg-before off Mitchell Santner’s bowling in the third delivery of the 46th over. Tries reviewing, but it’s as plumb as it can get.

Santner finishes with career-best figures of 7/53 as New Zealand bowl India out for 156, collecting a 103-run first innings lead. Given the conditions in Pune, it certainly will be a huge one!
