Ravichandran Ashwin brought up a sparkling century and was well supported by Ravindra Jadeja as the spin twins came to India’s rescue with a mammoth partnership on Day 1 of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai.
Ashwin brought up his sixth Test hundred, and his second at his home ground of the MA Chidambaram Stadium, with a brilliant knock that came at almost run-a-ball, bringing up the milestone in the final minutes of the evening session.
He was batting on 102 off 112 balls with Jadeja was batting on 86 at the other end, closing in on his fifth Test century, as India ended the day in the driver’s seat at 339/6. The pair shared a partnership that remained unbroken and was worth a whopping 195 at close of play on Thursday, helping India bounce back after they were reduced to 144/6 at one stage.

Earlier, pacer Hasan Mahmud got the Bangladeshis off to a dream start, carrying on from where he left off in the Test series against Pakistan as his four-wicket burst on either side of the lunch interval helped the visitors make the most of pace-friendly and overcast conditions after they opted to field at Chepauk.

More ShortsMahmud dismissed Indian batting greats Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli out for identical scores of 6 before removing Shubman Gill for an eight-ball duck in a superb new-ball spell in the morning.
The pacer, who had collected a match-winning 5/43 in the second Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi as the Tigers completed a 2-0 sweep, would later dismiss Rishabh Pant shortly after lunch, breaking a formidable fourth-wicket stand between the Indian keeper-batter and opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Later Jaiswal would depart shortly after bringing up a hard-fought half-century, departing for 56 after getting caught-behind off an express 148 kmph delivery from Nahid Rana. Off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz would then collect the first wicket by a spinner on Thursday, having KL Rahul (16) caught at short leg, resulting in India losing their sixth wicket with less than 150 on the board.
Bangladesh had earlier opted to field after winning the toss on a red-soil pitch that had a minimal grass covering, the first time a team opted to bowl after winning the toss in Chennai in 42 years.
India, keeping the conditions and the upcoming tour of Australia in mind, decided to name three pacers — Akash Deep in addition to Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj — along with Ashwin and Jadeja as their two frontline spinners.
