Yashasvi Jaiswal slammed the fourth Test century of his nascent career as he put Team India in a commanding position in the first Test against Perth at the Optus Stadium on Sunday. Indian opener Jaiswal got out for a duck on his first innings in Australia earlier in the match but the 22-year-old bounced back in style in the first Test of the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, as he took 205 balls to get to his first Test hundred in Australia. The Test hundred is even more special because it has come in Perth, a venue known for its high bounce and carry.
Jaiswal also forged an opening partnership of 201 with KL Rahul, who scored 77 before getting out to Mitchell Starc. Both Jaiswal and Rahul etched their name in history books also as this is India’s highest opening partnership in Australia.
India’s highest opening partnerships in Australia
Partnership pair | Runs | Venue | Year |
---|---|---|---|
Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul | 201 | Perth | 2024 |
Sunil Gavaskar and K Srikkanth | 191 | Sydney | 1986 |
Chetan Chauhan and Sunil Gavaskar | 165 | Melbourne | 1981 |
Aakash Chopra and Virender Sehwag | 141 | Melbourne | 2003 |
MH Mankad and CT Sarwate | 124 | Melbourne | 1948 |
Meanwhile, this is Jasiwal’s fourth international Test hundred, having already clinched three-figure scores against England twice and once against West Indies, but the Perth century is special. For starters, it has come at a difficult venue in Australia and second, most of the Indian batters including Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, and Virat Kohli, who have scored centuries in Perth, have gone on to become great players.
