India and Australia are set to meet on the cricketing field less than a week after their showdown in the ICC World Cup final in front of more than a lakh fans at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium. The Men in Blue have opted to exempt a number of their players who finished runners-up in the showpiece event from the T20I series with only a handful from the World Cup squad featuring in this series. For Australia, however, it’s the other way round with a majority of their World Cup squad staying back in India despite having been in the country since September and having also spent the months of February and March playing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and three ODIs. Only a handful of players, including skipper Pat Cummins, flew out of the country and were met with a lukewarm response back home, mainly due to the fact that the entire squad did not travel back home together. The five T20Is, however, will be significant to both India and Australia in their preparation for another World Cup — the one in the shortest format that the West Indies and USA will jointly host next summer. And given the focus will now be shifting firmly to the T20 format from ODIs, both India and Australia will have a bit of a headstart compared to most of the other teams.
