India vs Australia 1st ODI LIVE Score and Updates: India’s final dress rehearsal for the ODI Cricket World Cup 2023 begins on Friday with the first of the three-match ODI series against Australia at Mohali. The series and especially the first two ODIs are going to be nothing short of a litmus test for Men in Blue as regular skipper Rohit Sharma, star batter Virat Kohli and all-rounder Hardik Pandya have been rested for the first two matches. KL Rahul will be captaining India in the first two ODIs, while Australia will have Pat Cummins and Steve Smith returning to the team after missing the South Africa tour. Both players have been struggling with wrist injuries since the Ashes 2023. Pacer Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, however, will sit out of the first ODI. Starc is having groin soreness while Maxwell is facing ankle issues. All eyes will also be on Ravichandran Ashwin. The veteran off-spinner has been recalled to India’s ODI squad for the first since January 2022. He comes in as replacement for all-rounder Axar Patel who suffered a hamstring injury in the Asia Cup 2023. All-rounder Washington Sundar is also part of the squad, hence, it will be interesting to see who India will pick in the first ODI. India head coach Rahul Dravid has already stated that the Australia series is not a “trial” for Ashwin and that the spinner was always in management’s plans. “This is not a trial for Ashwin. Having someone of Ashwin’s experience to come back is always good for us. Someone like Ashwin provides you that experience, that ability to also contribute with the bat at No. 8 and someone we always thought of in case, there are certain opportunities opened, he is someone who is definitely a part of your plans and someone of his experience, I know has not played a lot of ODI cricket of late but someone of his experience can do that really well,” Dravid said at the pre-match press conference. Another player whose return is eagerly sought is Shreyas Iyer who missed the last few matches in Asia Cup 2023 due to back spasms. If Iyer doesn’t get match fit then India could make changes to their World Cup squad. Similarly, both teams will be looking to sort out their combinations but the focus will also be on keeping the players fresh as the World Cup starts in less than two weeks.
