ICC World Cup Factbox: How Pakistan have fared in quadrennial showpiece event over the years

Despite being among the most followed teams in cricketing history and producing some of the greatest players in the history of the sport, Pakistan have a grand total of just one ICC World Cup triumph to boast of. That and a runner-up finish seven years from their first and only title triumph. Their record at cricket’s showpiece event thus, certainly doesn’t reflect their true potential. And that is something that the Babar Azam-led side will be hoping to change in the 13th edition of the World Cup that will be hosted entirely in India and will be taking place between 5 October and 19 November. As we build towards the mega event, we bring to you some of Pakistan’s numbers in the World Cup since the inaugural edition in 1975: Titles: 1 World Cup recap: Pakistan are among the teams that have been part of every edition of the World Cup since the tournament began in 1975 as the Prudential World Cup. While they were knocked out in the Group Stage in the inaugural edition in 1975 after winning just one of their three matches and suffering defeats against eventual champions West Indies and runners-up Australia, they would go on to reach the semi-finals in the next three editions, including in the 1987 — the edition that was jointly hosted by India and Pakistan. Imran Khan’s ‘Cornered Tigers’ would then win their maiden world title in the 1992 edition that was jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand, producing a miraculous turnaround after nearly getting knocked out at one stage and defeating England by 22 runs in the final. The side that reached the final in 1999 in England would have several members from the victorious 1992 squad, though this time they suffered a rout at the hands of Steve Waugh’s Australia. The team would then suffer back-to-back first-round exits in 2003 and 2007 before making the semi-finals in 2011, where they would suffer another defeat against India in a knockout game. They would reach the quarter-finals in 2015, where they lost to eventual winners Australia, and would narrowly miss out on a place in the semi-finals in 2019, finishing fifth in the tournament that took place in the round robin format. Edition-wise performances 1975: Group Stage 1979: Semi-finals 1983: Semi-finals 1987: Semi-finals 1992: Champions 1996: Quarter-finals 1999: Runners-up 2003: Group Stage 2007: Group Stage 2011: Semi-finals 2015: Quarter-finals 2019: Group Stage World Cup record: Matches: 79; Won: 45; Lost: 32; No Result: 2; Tied: 0 Team Records Highest total: 349 vs Zimbabwe in Kingston, 2007.
