New Zealand women’s cricket not only won their first T20 World Cup on Sunday, but they also pocketed a mega cash prize for winning the ICC world title. The White Ferns defeated South Africa by 32 runs in the final played at the Dubai Cricket Stadium and earned a prize money of US$2.3 million (Rs 19 crore). Each player of the New Zealand team is now set to take home US$155,000 (Rs 1.3 crore), a life-changing amount in terms of women’s cricket.
South Africa will be awarded $1.17 million (Rs 9.8 crore) for reaching the final.
The two losing semi-finalists - Australia and the West Indies - were awarded $675,000 (Rs 5.7 crore) each.
Cash prize for India
Teams who finished third and fourth in Group A and B including India will receive $270,000 (Rs 2.25 crore) each.
Teams who finished fifth in their group will receive $135,000 (Rs 1.35 crore).
Overall, the women’s ICC T20 World Cup 2024 had a prize money pool of $7.95 million (Rs 66.5 crore approximately) which was an increase of 225 percent from the previous edition in 2023. The 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup had a total prize money pool of $2.45 million (Rs 20 crore approximately).
What happened in the final?
New Zealand batted first and posted a solid total of 158/5 as Suzie Bates smashed 32 off 31 balls and Amelia Kerr scored 43 off 38. Brooke Halliday played a quick-fire 38 off 28 balls toward the end to push New Zealand to the winning total.
