The ninth edition of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup gets underway on Thursday, 3 October with ‘hosts’ Bangladesh taking on Scotland in the tournament opener in Sharjah on Thursday. The tournament was originally supposed to have taken place in Bangladesh but was moved to the United Arab Emirates in a last-minute decision by the ICC due to unrest in the South Asian nation following violent protests that led to the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government getting overthrown.
All the matches in the ninth edition of the tournament will take place in October with the final taking place on the 20th of this month.
Australia have won a record six of the eight editions of the tournament that have taken place to date and will be strong favourites to add to their title count later this month.
Team India, led by Harmanpreet Kaur for the third consecutive edition, will also have their sights set on winning their first major global title after finishing runners-up in 2020 in Australia as well as in the 2017 ODI World Cup in England.
Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 Format
The 10 teams taking part in the competition have been divided into two groups of five teams each. Group A comprises defending champions Australia as well as former finalists India (2020) and New Zealand (2009, 2010) along with Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

More ShortsGroup B on the other hand, has ‘hosts’ Bangladesh along with England and West Indies, who won the tournament in 2009 and 2016 respectively. South Africa, who had finished runners-up on home soil last year, and Scotland are the other teams.
Each side plays the remaining four teams in their group once, and the top two teams from each group then progress to the semi-finals. The topper of one group faces the runner-up of the other and vice-versa. The winners of the two semi-finals then lock horns in the summit clash.
