The International Cricket Council (ICC) has decided to step in after reports that several cricket boards are still to release prize money from the 2024 T20 World Cup to the players. As per a report in Reuters, the ICC recently held discussions with five boards out of the 20 teams who took part in the T20 World Cup which took place in the USA and West Indies. The ICC has asked the boards to make the prize money payment to the players.
ICC intervenes after cricket boards refuse prize money to players
The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) on Wednesday said that some of the national cricket boards have taken to “threatening and intimidatory behaviour” in cases of non-payment of the prize money to the players.
“Extremely concerned… with a number of threats made against players who stand up for themselves and their colleagues in some cricket environments,” WCA CEO Tom Moffat said.
After ICC’s intervention, the WCA has released a new statement.
“We appreciate the ICC’s efforts to date in ensuring the players involved are paid in full and are certain the ICC will continue to take all appropriate steps against any Boards who do not do so and to enforce their terms of participation,” Moffat said in the statement.
“Every player in our sport should receive the benefits they are entitled to in full, and should be provided with a safe environment to play, work, and advocate for themselves and their colleagues off the field, through a players’ association if they choose.”
