Highlights, India vs Australia 3rd ODI at Ranchi, Full Cricket Score: Visitors win by 32 runs, keep series alive

India lost despite Virat Kohli scoring a century. 33 out of his 41 tons have come in a winning cause but today was all about Australia. They were excellent throughout. Opener Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja provided visitors a solid platform with Khawaja scoring his maiden ODI ton. Glenn Maxwell’s 47 helped them post 313/5 despite Indian bowlers doing well in final overs. And then the opening bowling of Pat Cummins and Jhye Richardson broke Indian batting’s backbone. Three wickets inside first seven overs left a lot for Kohli to do. He fought hard with a 95-ball 123 but once Adam Zampa removed him it was all Australia as the lower order flopped.

Most importantly, Australia stay alive in the series. That’s it for today, we will see you now on 10 March for the 4th ODI at Mohali. Till then, goodbye!

Usman Khawaja’s century today is the first century for Australia in a winning cause since David Warner’s century at Bangalore in September, 2017. In between, all seven centuries were resulted in a defeat.

This was only the fourth occasion when India lost an ODI while chasing when Virat Kohli scored a century.

Other three occasions:

v New Zealand, Napier, 2014

v Australia, Canberra, 2016

v West Indies, Pune, 2018

India now have been bowled out in four of their last five ODIs.

Khawaja: Absolutely, nothing like winning against a very good Indian side. Nice to get that win. Bowlers bowled beautifully. We weren’t quite sure what a good score is, Finchy batted beautifully, we had a nice partnership and so did Stoinis and Carey in the end to get us over 300. Feeling great to get my first hundred, I had a 98 before, nice to get those two extra runs

Usman Khawaja is the Player of the Match

Aaron Finch, Australia captain: Pretty good performance by the guys. Very good performance to get over 300 on that pitch. It was nice and especially in these conditions. The opening partnership allowed Maxwell to come in and play his game. I have been working really hard and have always had the faith I would get runs. Usman played a fantastic knock, Jhye was also impressive with the ball.

Virat Kohli, Indian captain: Virat Kohli, Indian captain: We were looking forward to chase the total, especially after we pulled things back in the last 10 overs after Maxi’s run out. With the way Australia were going, we thought we would have been chasing 350+. I was told dew would come in in the evening, but that didn’t happen and I got that wrong. Got that calculations wrong. The wicket was not getting any better to bat on, so we have. They kept pitching the ball in the good areas, then I got out and Vijay got out and then there was no looking back from thereon. No team wants to do that, we are a team that take pride in our cricket. We look forward to plug in next couple of games. In terms of hitting the ball, it was one of my finest hundred. I really disappointed when I got out. Australia deserved to win, Adam bowled well. Yes we will have couple of changes in the next couple of games, our mindset to win games for your country will remain the same. We will recoup and recover for the next game.

India losing a game while chasing despite a Kohli hundred is a very rare instance. But the Aussies have bowled well with the wet ball. That opening burst from Cummins and Richardson followed by the performance of Zampa sealed the deal for the visitors. The series is still alive.

Australia beat India by 32 runs in the 3rd ODI at Ranchi to stay alive in the series.

OUT! Kuldeep top edges the short ball and skipper Finch takes the catch.

Kuldeep Yadav c Finch b Pat Cummins 10(16). IND 281-all out.

After 48 overs,India 281/9 ( Kuldeep Yadav 10 , Jasprit Bumrah 0)

Two wickets and two fours for India. Jadeja got out trying to go over the top but failed to clear the circle and gave a catch away to mid-on. Shami slammed two fours with a top edge off pull shot through fine leg and a slap over mid-wicket but gave away a catch trying to play a slap shot over the top of covers.

Bumrah comes out to bat

OUT! Two big shots and then Shami perishes. Short ball by Richardson, Shami shuffles across and tries to play it over covers but doesn’t get the timing as Cummins takes the catch at the edge of circle.

Shami c Pat Cummins b J Richardson 8(4). IND 281/9.

FOUR! Length ball by Richardson as Shami clears his front foot to slam it over long-on

FOUR! Richardson bangs in first delivery against Shami short. Shami throws his bat on it as he gets a top edge to get a four

WICKET! Richardson dismisses Jadeja. It’s surely over for India. Richardson produces a slow off-cutter but Jadeja fails to clear the circle as he gives away a catch to Maxwell at mid-on.

Jadeja c Maxwell b J Richardson 24(31). IND 273/8.

After 47 overs,India 273/7 ( Ravindra Jadeja 24 , Kuldeep Yadav 10)

Finally something for Indians to rejoice. Jadeja goes for the slog sweep against Maxwell over mid-wicket fence for a six. 10 off the over. 41 needed in 3 overs.

SIX! Lovely shot from Jadeja. Goes for a slog sweep and clears the mid-wicket fence safely

Maxwell comes into attack

After 46 overs,India 263/7 ( Ravindra Jadeja 15 , Kuldeep Yadav 9)

Just three single off the over. Big shots are missing as the required rate continues to rise sky high. India need 51 runs in 24 balls

Australia added 41 runs in their last five overs while India need to score 54 runs in their last five overs to win the match.

After 45 overs,India 260/7 ( Ravindra Jadeja 14 , Kuldeep Yadav 7)

Kuldeep gets a four as India add seven more. Plays Lyon smartly with a late dab to steer him through third man area for a boundary. 54 needed in last 30 balls.

I can see the crowd leaving the stands. With Vijay, India’s hope for a series win in Ranchi are all but over. It will be nothing short of a miracle if Jadeja takes India past the finishing line from here.

FOUR! Well played by Kuldeep. Opens the face of the bat late to steer Lyon through third man area

After 44 overs,India 253/7 ( Ravindra Jadeja 13 , Kuldeep Yadav 1)

Just two from the over. Jadeja needs to play out of his skin here to take India close to the target. They need 61 in 36 balls.

Richardson comes into attack. Kuldeep Yadav comes out to bat.

After 43 overs,India 251/7 ( Ravindra Jadeja 12 , )

The scoreboard pressure does its job. India got nine runs from the over including a four for Shankar as he slog sweeps Lyon to mid-wicket fence but went for another big shot and this time could not clear the ropes as he holed out at mid-wicket.

WICKET! India’s hopes evaporate with the wicket of Shankar. Goes for another slog sweep but couldn’t clear the ropes this time as Richarson takes a good catch at deep mid-wicket.

Shankar c J Richardson b Lyon 32(30). IND 251/7.

FOUR! Another excellent shot by Shankar. Lyon goes full as Shankar swings his bat wildly to pull it through mid-wicket fence teasing the deep fielder

Lyon comes into attack

After 42 overs,India 243/6 ( Vijay Shankar 27 , Ravindra Jadeja 9)

Shankar finally brings out the big shot as he goes inside out with turn against Zampa’s wide delivery to get a boundary through covers. 11 off the over. Zampa’s quota comes to an end with match figures of 70/3 including the scalp of Kohli.

Hmm…so all teams to carry a leg-spinner in their ranks for the World Cup

FOUR! Shankar goes inside out with the turn over the covers for a much needed boundary

After 41 overs,India 231/6 ( Vijay Shankar 19 , Ravindra Jadeja 7)

Four singles added but India are in need of big shots. 83 need in nine overs and the required rate is now upto 9.22.

After 40 overs,India 227/6 ( Vijay Shankar 17 , Ravindra Jadeja 5)

LBW appeal against Jadeja first ball as he is rapped on the pads playing a sweep, however, the ball had pitched outside leg. A single and double and then another LBW appeal against Jadeja as he misses another sweep shot. This looked on middle and off but umpire Wilson was unmoved. Replays showed it should have been out but Aussies don’t have any review left.

After 39 overs,India 223/6 ( Vijay Shankar 16 , Ravindra Jadeja 3)

The chase looks improbable now for India but Shankar and Jadeja has the capability. One of them needs to score quickly while the other needs to hold one end to protect the tail from getting exposed. Two off the over.

And there goes Kohli. Has Zampa turned the game on its head? What a night he is having! The wrist-spinner has so far taken the wickets of Dhoni, Jadhav and Kohli.

Meanwhile, India’s last recognised batting pair at the crease now and the asking rate is close to 8.5. Stiff ask this is for the home team.

After 38 overs,India 221/6 ( Vijay Shankar 15 , Ravindra Jadeja 2)

Australia get the big wicket of Kohli as Zampa knocks him over. Good bowling by the leggie. Hit for two consecutive fours by the Indian captain, first a drive through covers and then a pull shot to mid-wicket. Zampa follows it up with a full and quick slider which Kohli completely missed trying to play the drive. Jadeja joins Shankar. India need 93 in 72 balls.

Ravindra Jadeja comes out to join Shankar in the middle

BOWLED ‘EM! AUSTRALIA GET KOHLI! Lack of concentration gets the better of Kohli. A quick slider, full and Kohli completely missed it trying to play the drive as Zampa knocks him over.

Kohli b Zampa 123(95). IND 219/6.

FOUR! Zampa goes short and Kohli punishes him with a pull shot to backward square leg

FOUR! Tossed up ball and Kohli creams it through extra cover for a boundary

After 37 overs,India 211/5 ( Virat Kohli (C) 115 , Vijay Shankar 15)

Six runs off the over. No boundaries but singles and double keep India’s scoreboard ticking. Important to keep the runs coming.

Cummins comes back into attack

Mind-boggling

After 36 overs,India 205/5 ( Virat Kohli (C) 111 , Vijay Shankar 13)

Big over for India! 14 runs off it! Kohli top edges the slog sweep and it went really high up but thankfully went just over Marsh in deep. Zampa succeeds in finding Shankar’s outside edge but it went past short third man as Shankar went for a wild slash.

For Vijay Shankar, this is a golden opportunity to seal his World Cup spot. If he can play an innings of substance, the Chennai boy will get his boarding pass for that England bound flight.

41st ODI century:

Sachin Tendulkar – 369 innings

Virat Kohli – 217 innings

In his last 11 ODI innings at home, Virat Kohli has scored a century in seven of them including today.

FOUR! Shankar throws his bat at the outside off slider from Zampa. Thick outside edge but it runs past short third man.

SIX! Slog sweep goes over the fence. Nervous few seconds for Indians though as it went really high as Kohli top edged the slog sweep and barely made it past Marsh in deep

After 35 overs,India 191/5 ( Virat Kohli (C) 102 , Vijay Shankar 9)

Maxwell starts the over with a quicker drifter across off as Kohli nicks it but Carey fails to hold onto the catch. Single followed by a DRS call for an LBW appeal against Shankar but it had pitched well outside off as the all-rounder survives. Another single and then a push down the ground by Kohli for a double as he brings up his 41st ODI ton. Second consecutive hundred.

20 – Sachin Tendulkar v Australia
19 – Don Bradman v England

HUNDRED NO. 41! A push down the ground for a double and Kohli brings up his second consecutive hundred.

REVIEW AND NOT OUT! Aussies take a DRS for an LBW appeal against Shankar but it pitched well outside leg.

DROPPED! Carey drops Kohli on 98. Maxwell succeeds in finding Kohli’s outside edge but the keeper couldn’t hold onto it.

With the fall of Kedar Jadhav’s wicket, Australia are right back in the game. The asking rate is touching 8 and India just have Jadeja to follow. So, the onus is on this partnership to get the hosts close to Australia’s total.

Meanwhile, Kohli is nearing his 41st ODI ton. What a champion performer he has been for India!!

After 34 overs,India 186/5 ( Virat Kohli (C) 98 , Vijay Shankar 8)

Four singles off the over. Time for drinks. Kohli is on 98. India need 128 more in 16 overs at 8 per over.

Seven off the over. Shankar gets a boundary as Maxwell goes short. The batsman gets deep into his crease to cut it past backward point.

Maxwell comes into attack

After 32 overs,India 175/5 ( Virat Kohli (C) 95 , Vijay Shankar 1)

Kohli gets a four first ball as he top-edges the leg break by Zampa through backward point. Takes a single followed by Jadhav’s wicket. Jadhav went for a sweep shot but missed it to be hit in front of stumps. Asked Kohli for his opinion and captain aked him to keep walking.

Vijay Shankar comes out to bat

WICKET! India lose Jadhav. Zampa breaks the stand. Length ball and Jadhav goes for a sweep but misses it as it strikes his pad. Asks for his captain’s opinion but Kohli asks him to keep walking.

FOUR! Cracking shot! Length ball outside off as Kohli comes down a bit to pummel it through covers

FOUR! Length ball drifting onto pads, played fine by Kohli behind square leg boundary

Richardson comes into attack

After 30 overs,India 160/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 81 , Kedar Jadhav 26)

Lyon tosses up the first delivery but misses his line as he strays onto the pads for Kohli to flick it fine behind the keeper for a boundary. Three singles added as well including a risky one from Jadhav and a direct hit from Maxwell would have sent Kohli back to the hut. Seven off the over.

FOUR! Lovely use of hands. Tossed up delivery on leg as Kohli gets back to flick it fine behind the wicket

After 29 overs,India 153/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 75 , Kedar Jadhav 25)

Jadhav tucks the full pitched delivery from Maxwell to square leg for a single. Kohli adds another single with a push to long-on.

Virat Kohli has scored three fifty-plus scores out of his last five ODI innings while chasing at home in ODIs including today with two centuries.

What will be the result of the Ranchi ODI?

After 28 overs,India 151/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 74 , Kedar Jadhav 24)

Good over by Lyon. Keeps it tight as India add three singles. 163 needed in 22 overs. Required rate 7.41.

Virat Kohli and his cover drives!!!

Some of the shots he has played on this two-paced wicket are absolutely stunning. Speaks of his class. Tonight Kohli is holding the fort for India as the hosts are gradually making a comeback in this contest. Seems the Ranchi crowd are in for a treat tonight.

Lyon comes into attack

After 27 overs,India 148/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 73 , Kedar Jadhav 22)

Four leg byes as Maxwell’s off spin beats everyone. Beats Kohli’s inside edge, strikes his pads and runs away to the fence. Jadhav brings up a four with a shot down the ground. Flighted delivery and Jadhav comes down to smash it over Maxwell. 11 off the over.

Big over for India. 14 from it and three fours for Kohli. Drives the outside off length ball through covers for a boundary, then flicks the short ball with immaculate timing between fine leg and backward square leg. Stoinis goes full and wide as he leans forward and drives him through covers.

FOUR! Stoinis bangs in short as Kohli jumps back to flick it between fine leg and backward square leg

FOUR! Kohli goes inside out and times the length ball perfectly to drive it through covers

After 25 overs,India 123/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 59 , Kedar Jadhav 15)

Zampa comes back into attack

After 24 overs,India 117/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 58 , Kedar Jadhav 10)

Just as we started talking about lack of boundaries, Kohli comes up with two glorious shots. Finch removes Zampa to bring back Stoinis who is slammed for two consecutive fours. First off a short ball as Kohli produces a solid swivel shot through fine leg and then a deft glance past behind the wicket. 10 off the over.

Kohli takes a single with a drive to covers. Jadhav adds one more with a push to long-on. Kohli takes another single with a pull to long-off and then leg byes followed by an LBW appeal but the ball was going away.

After 21 overs,India 99/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 45 , Kedar Jadhav 7)

Four runs off the over as Jadhav and Kohli collect two singles each. 215 more needed in 29 overs.

After 20 overs,India 95/4 ( Virat Kohli (C) 43 , Kedar Jadhav 5)

Ranchi stadium stunned as Zampa gets the better of Dhoni. Full delivery, Dhoni goes for a swing down the ground and inside edges onto the stumps. Jadhav comes out and gets off the mark with a square cut through backward point for a four. Kohli finishes the over with a drag shot to long leg for another boundary. Nine off the over.

Anticlimax in Ranchi!

Zampa removes a dangerous looking Dhoni. Exactly what India were not looking for at this stage of the game. The partnership was gradually bailing India out of trouble. Pin drop silence in the stands as Dhoni left the field, perhaps for the final time on his home ground in India colours.

However, India are still not out of it. As long as Kohli there, they are in the game. Though he needs some support from the likes of Jadhav, Vijay and Jadeja.

FOUR! A bit short and Kohli drags it to long leg. Not timed to perfection but still had enough behind it.

FOUR! Jadhav gets off the mark. A bit full from Zampa and the batsmen cuts it expertly through backward point.

Most sixes for India in ODIs:

195 – Sachin Tendulkar

189 – Sourav Ganguly

153 – Yuvraj Singh

OUT! BOWLED! India lose Dhoni and there’s pin drop silence in the stadium. Full delivery, probably a bit too full to drive as Dhoni went for a straight drive. Thick inside edge onto his shoes and then to the stumps.

Dhoni b Zampa 26(42). IND 86/4.

After 19 overs,India 86/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 39 , MS Dhoni (W) 26)

Good over for India. 12 runs off it. Including a huge six from Dhoni. Shimmies down and slams Lyon high over mid-wicket with spin for a six.

100 – MS Dhoni
103 – Sourav Ganguly
106 – Sanath Jayasuriya

FOUR! Excellent shot. A bit short from Stoinis as Kohli gets over it to punch it through covers for a boundary

The ball is skidding on here. Looks like a little bit of dew has started to settle in. For Australia, a lot will depend on how Lyon bowls here. It is going to be a stiff challenge for him bowling against these two top batsmen in the world.

After 15 overs,India 57/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 25 , MS Dhoni (W) 14)

Three singles from the over including an LBW appeal against Kohli but he took a good stride forward and replays showed there was an inside-edge as well.

After 14 overs,India 54/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 23 , MS Dhoni (W) 13)

Dhoni drives the first ball to covers for a single, Kohli adds another one with a nudge to third man. Two more singles added. Four off the over.

FOUR! Excellent thinking and execution from Kohli. Lyon strays onto his pads as Kohli flicks it late and fine. Quick outfield means no fielder can stop it.

Offie Nathan Lyon comes into attack

After 12 overs,Australia 66/0 ( Aaron Finch (C) 26 , Usman Khawaja 38)

Kohli punches the short ball through covers for a single. Dhoni takes one with a drive to point and Kohli adds another with a flick. Three off the over.

Cummins gets back into attack

After 11 overs,Australia 61/0 ( Aaron Finch (C) 26 , Usman Khawaja 33)

After 10 overs,Australia 52/0 ( Aaron Finch (C) 21 , Usman Khawaja 29)

Two fours for MS Dhoni. India are 40/3 but the Ranchi crowd doesn’t care. They are going crazy over MSD shots. Cuts the wide delivery from Richardson through backward point for a boundary and then punishes th bowler for the short ball with a pull over square leg for another four.

FOUR! Richardson goes short as Dhoni pulls him over backward square leg for a boundary

FOUR! Richardson gets his line wrong. A bit short and width offered as Dhoni drives it through backward point.

Richardson continues

After 9 overs,India 32/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 13 , MS Dhoni (W) 1)

Stoinis has been called into attack to replace Cummins. Dhoni misses the flick as the ball strikes his pad and runs down to square leg for a leg bye. India were sloppy in the field today but Zampa decided to return the favour as he misfields the flick shot from Kohli at short mid-wicket. India collect a single. Dhoni adds one more with a punch to mid-off. Three off the over.

M S D !!

Marcus Stoinis comes into attack

After 8 overs,India 29/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 12 , MS Dhoni (W) 0)

Kohli flicks the fifth delivery to mid-wicket to collect a double after keeping quite for first four balls.

After 7 overs,India 27/3 ( Virat Kohli (C) 10 , MS Dhoni (W) 0)

Another excellent over for Cummins as he removes Rayudu. Finds some late movement off the seam to square Rayudu up to knock his offstump. Local boy MS Dhoni has come out to bat. Maiden over.

What a contrasting beginning for the Indians compared to their counterparts!

The Aussie new ball bowlers are all over the hosts now. Pace, swing, accuracy backed up by the uneven nature of the pitch. India are in a spot of bother right now. They need something special from Kohli and local boy MS (perhaps, playing his final international match on home turf) to get past Australia tonight.

MS Dhoni comes out ot bat

OUT! India in deep trouble. Rayudu gone! Some late movement there from Cummins off the seam as he beats Rayudu all ends up to uproot his off stump.

Rayudu b Pat Cummins 2(8). IND 27/3.

After 6 overs,India 27/2 ( Virat Kohli (C) 10 , Ambati Rayudu 2)

Another wide delivery and Kohli gets his drive through the gap between point and backward point. Five off the over

FOUR! Width offered once again as Kohli throws his bat on it to get it through backward point

After 5 overs,India 22/2 ( Virat Kohli (C) 6 , Ambati Rayudu 1)

Quite an eventful over and a big one for Australia as India lose both of their openers. Rohit gets a four first after he nicks the nipbacker from Cummins which goes over his leg stump to fine leg fence. Then gets hit on pads trying to play from crease. Not out given but Aussies take a review and replays show three reds and he had to leave. Rohit wasn’t happy though, he felt there was an inside-edge. Kohli finishes the over with a glorious four with a shot through backward point.

Virat Kohli at JSCA Stadium, Ranchi in ODIs:

77* v England, 2013
139* v Sri Lanka, 2014
45 v New Zealand, 2016

Shikhar Dhawan has now scored only 69 runs from his previous six ODI innings at an average of 11.50. Moreover, he averages only 26.50 with the bat from 11 innings in this year in ODIs.

FOUR! Width offered by Cummins as Kohli rises to get over the delivery to drive it through backward point . Lovely shot

And Dhawan’s disappointing series continues. He wanted to break the shackles after being kept quite for 9 balls. But when you are out of form, things generally do not go on your way. Australia get the early breakthrough to push India on the backfoot.

Ambati Rayudu comes out to bat

REVIEW AND OUT! Rohit has to go. He’s struck on pads trying to play a cross-bat shot. Not out given but Australia goes for a DRS call. Replays show there was no inside edge and the ball would have hit the stumps. Rohit was unhappy, he felt he had nicked it.

Rohit lbw b Pat Cummins 14(14). IND 15/2.

FOUR! Inside-edge but Rohit survives. Almost played it onto his stumps. Cummins gets one to nip back as Rohit edged it trying to open the face of his bat. It went over leg stump to fine leg fence

After 4 overs,India 11/1 ( Rohit Sharma 10 , Virat Kohli (C) 0)

Excellent bowling by Richardson! Wicket-maiden! Dhawan’s struggle for run stretches as he gets out trying to drive Richardson through off. He was tempted by the width on offer but failed to keep his drive down as Maxwell took the catch at point. Time for a Kohli special!

Chase-master Virat Kohli comes out to bat

Indian players to hit 350-plus sixes in international cricket:

MS Dhoni
ROHIT SHARMA*

OUT! Dhawan’s poor form continues. There was width on offer as Dhawan went for the flashy drive but failed to keep it down as Maxwell took a diving catch at point.

Dhawan c Maxwell b J Richardson 1(10). IND 11/1.

After 3 overs,India 11/0 ( Shikhar Dhawan 1 , Rohit Sharma 10)

Rohit gets off the mark with a glorious boundary. Late open-face dab off length ball from Cummins helps him get a boundary through third man area on first delivery. Brings up the first six of the innings on the last ball with a lofted shot down the ground. 10 off the over.

SIX! Cummins goes full there and Rohit calmly drives it on the up over the bowler’s head

India’s last five opening stands in ODIs:
0, 4, 8, 21, 39

FOUR! Lovely timing! Length ball and Rohit guides it to third man with an open-face dab. The outfield in Ranchi is super quick.

After 2 overs,India 1/0 ( Shikhar Dhawan 1 , Rohit Sharma 0)

Excellent start for Richardson as he begins with a maiden. Dhawan has been out of form lately and would be under pressure to score. However, did play a nice drive on the up which was fielded by a diving Maxwell at point.

Jhye Richardson comes into attack from other end

After 1 overs,India 1/0 ( Shikhar Dhawan 1 , Rohit Sharma 0)

No Nathan Coulter-Nile for Australia today, so Pat Cummins has opened the attack. Dhawan gets off the mark with a forward push to mid-off on the first delivery followed by five consecutive dot balls. Good start for Aussies.

It’s time for the chase! Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma are at the crease. Dhawan on strike. Pat Cummins to bowl the first over.

Australia’s record while scoring 300-plus runs against India batting first in ODIs before today:

Matches – 18

Won – 14

Lost – 3

NR – 1

How will the Ranchi pitch treat Shikhar Dhawan?

After 40 overs, Australia were 244/2 and in the final 10 they could only manage 69 runs losing 3 wickets. Their middle-order has collapsed once again and India’s death bowling has restricted them to a manageable total. Still, a chase of 314 won’t be a cakewalk for the hosts. They need their top-three to fire.

Australia today:

1-10 overs: 52/0

11-20 overs: 72/0

21-30 overs: 62/0

31-40 overs: 58/2

41-50 overs: 69/3

After 50 overs,Australia 313/5 ( Marcus Stoinis 31 , Alex Carey (W) 21)

Couple of boundaries to go with couple of singles and as many dot balls from Bumrah’s final over. Australia set India 314 to win. India on the brink of winning the series at MS Dhoni’s home ground. India will be happy with how they were able to pull the game back in the last 15 overs or so.

Centurion Usman Khawaja and Aaron Finch set things wonderfully for Australia with a mammoth 193-run stand, but after Finch’s departure they kept losing regular wickets. India struck three times in five deliveries around 43rd over mark, which was started off with Dhoni’s smart work to run the dangerous Maxwell out and that sort of derailed Australia’s innings, a 50-run partnership betwen Stoinis and Carey push Australia past 300, will it be enough? We’ll find out on the other side of the break.

FOUR! Another length ball outside off stump by Bumrah, was the off-cutter and Stoinis had thrashed it through covers for the second boundary of the over.

FOUR! Full and outside off, Carey creates room and slashes it hard past the backward point for a boundary

After 49 overs,Australia 303/5 ( Marcus Stoinis 26 , Alex Carey (W) 16)

A boundary of the last ball gets Australia past the 300-mark. Shami bowls a reasonable penultimate over giving away 10 runs. Stoinis gets it wide of long on for a couple of the first ball, followed by four singles. Shami completes his spell giving away 52 runs for a wicket.

FOUR! A little too straight. Shami was looking to fire in the yorker into the base of the leg stump but Stoinis was prepared, flicking it away behind square for a boundary

After 48 overs,Australia 293/5 ( Marcus Stoinis 18 , Alex Carey (W) 14)

Stoinis nails a straight drive but hits the wickets at the non-striker’s end. They are unable to take a single. Bumrah bowls a perfect toe-crusher to Stoinis, who gets an underedge behind, enough time for him to run a single. Stoinis is able to get an important boundary in the over before Bumrah thuds him with full inslanter on his pads. The Aussies steal a single.

FOUR! Stoinis brings down the angled bat down and carves it fine to third man fence. Using the pace of the wide yorker from Bumrah. Smart

After 47 overs,Australia 286/5 ( Marcus Stoinis 13 , Alex Carey (W) 13)

Excellent comeback by Shami in the over after he was struck for couple of boundaries, outfoxing Carey with the change ups. Nine runs off the first three balls and then two more off the last three.

FOUR! Carey this time goes downtown. Length ball and Carey has cracked it past the non-striker. Powerful strike.

FOUR! Carey just about finds the gap, Vijay Shankar puts in the dive but he simply goes over the ball, unable to cut it off at extra covers.

After 46 overs,Australia 275/5 ( Marcus Stoinis 12 , Alex Carey (W) 3)

Bumrah now, in his favourite part of the innings runs in to bowl the 46th over and once again he has been accurate, giving away just three runs from the over.

After 45 overs,Australia 272/5 ( Marcus Stoinis 10 , Alex Carey (W) 2)

With once 350+ very much within the reach, Australia will now have to work hard to get to 300. Nine runs from Shami’s over. Stoinis needs to bat till the end if Australia have any hopes of reaching 320

Have your say on Australia’s likely score

FOUR! Poor delivery, deserved to be put away. Was short and quite wide, and Stoinis slaps it over point for a boundary

Australia are losing the plot thick and fast. Mindless shot selections. Three wickets in quick successions. All the work by their opening pair are being undone. At one point 350 was on the cards and now they have bat out their skins to reach 320.

After 44 overs,Australia 263/5 ( Marcus Stoinis 3 , Alex Carey (W) 0)

Australia’s slide continues as India have struck three times in his five balls. Marsh and Handscomb depart in Kuldeep’s over. Only a single off the over as Kuldeep finishes with three wickets off his 10 overs

Kuldeep Yadav has taken atleast two wickets in 12 out of his last 16 ODIs.

OUT! Another one! Kuldeep has three wickets in last five deliveries. Pitched on off and middle and turned it into Peter Handscomb, he misses the flick and hits him on the pad. Loud appeal and the umpire raises the finger. Handscomb doesn’t trouble the scorers.

OUT! Marsh holes out and Australia’s implosion continues. Kuldeep is never afraid to give the ball some air, inviting Marsh into the big shot. He goes for it, doesn’t middle it and hits it right down long on’s throat.

Shaun Marsh c Shankar b Kuldeep Yadav 7(12)

After 43 overs,Australia 262/3 ( Shaun Marsh 7 , Marcus Stoinis 2)

Marcus Stoinis also gets a promotion. He walks in at number five. Jadeja quickly gets through his final over, giving away just four singles, ending with figures of 10-0-64-0.

After 42 overs,Australia 258/3 ( Shaun Marsh 5 , )

The over started off with a six by Maxwell and was looking like a beginning of an assault in the final overs, but some outstanding smart work from Dhoni has cut short Maxwell’s innings, ending the over in India’s favour. India continue to claw their way back. Australia’s score pegged back by at least 25-30 runs

OUT! MS Dhoni with his trickery has pulled off another wicket and it is a big one of Glenn Maxwell. Ranchi roars. Marsh had cut it fierecely to covers, where Jadeja only half-stopped it and sensing an opportunity the batsmen go for a single. Ever-so quick Jadeja gets up, skids and throws the ball to MSD, the throw was just over the stumps but Dhoni simply tapped in the direction of the stumps a subtle but effective deflection. This is fabulous work from Dhoni, we have seen him do this so many times but yet everytime he brings something new to the table. Decisive touch and this is a huge wicket

 Maxwell run out (Jadeja/Dhoni) 47(31)

SIX! WHACK! Maxwell gets a good chunk off this one. Flat hit with lot of muscle involved in the shot that clears the fielder at long off.

After 41 overs,Australia 249/2 ( Glenn Maxwell 39 , Shaun Marsh 4)

Jadeja comes in to bowl his penultimate over. Good over, giving away just five including a misfield from Virat Kohli at extra cover. Was struck hard from Maxwell and seems in bit of pain.

After 40 overs,Australia 244/2 ( Glenn Maxwell 37 , Shaun Marsh 1)

Marsh almost ended up throwing Maxwell down the river in pursuit of his first run. He simply taps a slower delivery from Bumrah on the offside and sets off for a suicidal run, fortunately for Maxwell and Australia, he misses his target. Five runs from the over. Bumrah too bowling lot of variations here. India have pulled things back a touch in last few overs. Can Australia still get to 350? Ten overs remaining.

After 39 overs,Australia 239/2 ( Glenn Maxwell 33 , Shaun Marsh 0)

Shami might not be bowling full throttle after getting hit on the shin and makes great use of the slower ball to get the wicket of Khawaja. Shaun Marsh is in at number four and is unable to get off the mark in his four deliveries. There was an early misfield in the over by Bumrah at mid off, seen quite a few today

OUT! Khawja walks back after a scntillating century. Was the off-cutter from Shami, Khawaja goes for the pull and gets a toe-end giving mid wicket a simple catch. End of wonderful innings.

Khawaja c Bumrah b Shami 104(113)

After 38 overs,Australia 237/1 ( Usman Khawaja 103 , Glenn Maxwell 32)

Another good over from Vijay, given the circumstances. Four singles off the bat and a leg bye is something India would gleefully accept.

This is Usman Khawaja’s first century in ODIs. His previous highest score in ODI cricket was 98, came against West Indies at Basseterre in 2016.

India might have got the all important breakthrough, but the Aussies are still in a dominating position, courtesy to that massive opening stand. Also, after being promoted up the order, Glenn Maxwell seems to have got into his grooves quickly. So, the skills of India’s death bowlers will be tested in this final phase of the Australian innings.

After 37 overs,Australia 232/1 ( Usman Khawaja 100 , Glenn Maxwell 31)

Australia continue to gallop. Maxwell with some exquiste shots to pound 14 off the first three balls. Close leg before shout against Khawaja on 99 is turned down, perhaps because of the impact being outside the line. He brings up his maiden ODI 100 with a single off the next ball

HUNDRED! Usman Khawaja brings up his first ODI century! Looks such a relieved man. Fabulous knock from the Australian opener, took some time coming but he has batted brilliantly today.

FOUR! Boundaries to continue to flow. This is simply way too good. Maxwell goes inside out. An amazing lofted cover drive

FOUR! Maxwell brings out the slog sweep and drags it to mid wicket boundary

SIX! Wow! Maxi effortlessly tonks a length ball over long on. Was angled into the batsman and Maxwell simply lofts it high and long. Incredible hit for a six.

After 36 overs,Australia 216/1 ( Usman Khawaja 99 , Glenn Maxwell 16)

Khawaja decides against single off the final ball and stays on 99. Maxwell struck a superb boundary early in the over, eight collect from Vijay’s over.

FOUR! Stunning shot from Maxwell. Just a top cover drive, Maxwell puts away the half-volley

After 35 overs,Australia 208/1 ( Usman Khawaja 96 , Glenn Maxwell 11)

Decent over from Jadeja after the drinks interval. Giving away just four singles. They say double the score from the 35th over mark, can Australia smash 400?
