Highlights cricket result, Pakistan vs World XI, 1st T20I at Lahore: Hosts win by 20 runs

Pakistan win by 20 runs! Just to think back, how crucial was that Shoaib Malik’s innings? Anyways, World XI were always playing the catch-up game after the first six overs. They were never in the chase and ultimately Sarfraz Ahmed’s men took a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series.

That brings us to the end of this coverage. Pakistan dominated in the first T20 and we hope that it changes tomorrow when both these sides meet for the second T20I. Do join us for all the coverage. Till then, it’s goodbye!

Pakistan captain, Sarfraz Ahmed: It was an important game. Babar and Shehzad played well. Malik did well towards the end. There’s lot of talent blooming in the domestic circuit and I’m sure many youngsters will get their chances in the future if they keep working hard.

World XI captain, Faf du Plessis: Yeah it was a good game. I thought Pakistan played exceptionally. They have got great variations in their bowling line up ours was probably a bit one-dimensional. We needed big partnership that needed to kick on. As I said I needed to kick on to get a big 50-60. Hopefully we can get some rest and come out fresh tomorrow and level the series. Great to play here and hopefully the crowds will be full for the next two games.

**Babar Azam, Man of the Match: (**Why is his T20 record terrific?0 No special reason, but my mindset is clear and I plan well. There was no pressure. It was a slow wicket and we concentrated on building the partnership. (Has his fitness improved?) I have worked on my fitness.

Sammy is a favourite with the Pakistani crowd; depositing those sixes out of the park later in the innings but the Pakistan team wins this openning encounter of the Independence Cup. Wonder if Sammy could cup up the order owing to his experience playing against his PSL colleagues. I am certain answering this and other questions will only make this series more competitive.

World XI fought hard at the end but it was always going to be difficult catching up after their innings lost momentum in the middle overs. Tim Paine coming in at number 3 was inexplicable given the all round strength and fire power they had in their batting line up. Hassan Ali was hard to get away at the death with his accurate yorkers and change of pace. It’s a great start to the series though. World XI looked competitive but slightly undercooked in the first game. They will look to iron out some technical and strategic deficiencies from this game and pull one back in the next game. No one wants this series to be one-way traffic for the host.

Predicting the result of this game from here won’t merit any prizes but what deserves absolute adulation and applause is the support given by International stars to revive the game of cricket in Pakistan. Babars knock really took the game away from World 11 in hindsight and what a beautiful knock it was.

Some late fireworks from Sammy. Two sixes. But the equation is still 34 off 6 balls.

Is that it? 50 from 18. Just a matter of time now before Pakistan emerge victorious. Nine runs off the over as Sohail Khan completes his four overs. His figures: 4-0-28-2.

Hasan Ali comes back after his 22-run over. He responds well, naturally, as the pressure is less. Thisara fails to hit the big ones so does Sammy. An outstanding over, 3 off it.

A flurry of boundaries against the run of play has kept World XI in the hunt. Thisara Perera with the bat always gives it as good as he gets and he has come out with his typical agricultural heaves to give Sarfaraz a few things to worry about just when the game looked sealed in host’s favour. He is now joined by another trigger happy all rounder Darren Sammy. Pakistan still well ahead in the contest though and it will take something special for World XI to win from here.

Its quite humid in the stands but nothing can bring down the fervor in the crowd as cricket comes home to Pakistan. An uphill task it might be for the world eleven but the fans of cricket cheer them on as well when they hit the ropes or cross them. They want to enjoy the cricket spectacle more than anything

This is getting harder and harder for World XI. Pakistan in the field has looked like a well-oiled unit. The bowlers are keeping it tight and fielders are holding on to the chances. World XI innings has never found any impetus so far. There is still some batting fire power in the dugout and in the middle for World XI though. Everyone with a bat in hand needs to go hell for leather from here on, to give tourists any chance of getting close to the Pakistani total.

After 16 overs,World XI 139/5 ( Grant Elliott 8 , Thisara Perera 14)

The onslaught from Thisara Perera has brought the equation down to 59 off 24 balls. Weird things have happened in cricket but this still looks like Pakistan’s game. World XI will need another big over to have an outside chance.

FOUR! FOUR FOUR! Thisara is certainly not giving up. He slaps the fourth ball to midwicket and punches the fifth to long off. To top it all, he smears the final delivery, which is a full toss, to deep square leg.

Too difficult for World XI here. 74 off 30 balls needed. Thisara and Elliott at the centre. Pakistan will feel they have the game in control despite Shadab’s 14-run over. Will there be a twist?

Pakistan spinners have squeezed in some really tight overs after Rumman Raees claimed both openers in the same over. Imad Waseem and Shadab Khan are smart limited overs bowlers and have varied their pace and flight beautifully to keep the batsmen guessing. Tim Paine has used a lot of deliveries to get going here, a six against Shadab will make him breathe a bit easier but he needs to make it count now after getting his eye in.

Update: Pakistan win by 20 runs! Just to think back, how crucial was that Shoaib Malik’s innings? Anyways, World XI were always playing the catch-up game after the first six overs. They were never in the chase and ultimately Sarfraz Ahmed’s men took a 1-0 lead in the 3-match series. Preview: Pakistan is preparing to show the cricketing world that it’s safe to play international matches in the country by staging a three-match Twenty20 international series against a World XI in Lahore next week. Only Zimbabwe has toured Pakistan — for a short limited-overs series two years ago — since terrorists attacked a Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009. The World XI tour is a major breakthrough for the Pakistan Cricket Board, which had been working to attract international cricket to the country. [caption id=“attachment_4036309” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]Cricket returns to Pakistan after 8 years as Faf du Plessis will lead World XI against Sarfraz Ahmed’s side for 3 T20Is. Image courtesy: Twitter @ICC Cricket returns to Pakistan after 8 years as Faf du Plessis will lead World XI against Sarfraz Ahmed’s side for 3 T20Is. Image courtesy: Twitter @ICC[/caption] Since 2009 Pakistan has played most of its home matches in the United Arab Emirates and also staged two editions of its premier domestic T20 tournament — the Pakistan Super League — in the UAE. The successful hosting of the PSL final at Lahore earlier this year gave the PCB enough confidence to schedule a T20 series against the World XI in collaboration with the International Cricket Council. Led by South Africa’s Faf du Plessis, the star-studded World XI includes West Indies’ World Twenty20 winning captain Darren Sammy, who also competed in the PSL final for Peshawar Zalmi, New Zealand’s Grant Elliott, Australia’s Tim Paine, England’s Paul Collingwood, Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal and Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera. “These might be baby steps before some giant steps are taken. For now, let’s back this to the hilt,” former Pakistan test cricketer and now television commentator Ramiz Raja said. “Everyone is here and they realize that they are part of a greater cause, and they have accepted they are part of something more important than just themselves,” Sammy added on Saturday in Dubai where the World XI players are assembled before flying to Lahore late Sunday night. “It is important that the passionate Pakistan fans get to experience international cricket in their country,” Sammy said. Apart from Du Plessis, Hashim Amla, David Miller, Morne Morkel and Imran Tahir are the other South African players who will be representing the World XI. “I can speak for myself and everyone in the World XI squad that we’re all really excited to get to Pakistan, to be part of something special, and introducing international cricket slowly and safely back to Pakistan,” Amla told reporters in Dubai on Sunday. “For all the players it’s part of being something bigger and trying to get international cricket back to Pakistan, which is really important for world cricket.” The PCB has high hopes for the series. It has already scheduled a Twenty20 international against Sri Lanka in October, subject to security clearance, and a three-match T20 series against the West Indies in November is also in the pipeline. Both federal and Punjab provincial government have promised foolproof security for the World XI. Several thousand of security officials are expected to be deployed over the next five days and spectators have to stand in long lines at several security checkpoints before entering the Gaddafi Stadium. “I am not worried about these security checkpoints, I am more excited that on Tuesday doors of international cricket will be opened in Pakistan,” said Mohammad Abdullah, a college student. Hundreds of fans were turned away on Sunday after the cheapest $5 tickets had sold out, leaving only the premium $60 and $80 seats still available for the three games. Despite playing its home matches abroad, Pakistan rose to the top of the test rankings last year and also won the Champions Trophy. “This series could not have been better timed,” another former test captain and fast bowler Waqar Younis said. “Pakistan produced a superb performance by winning the ICC Champions Trophy and the players deserve the opportunity to display their class at home venues.” The Pakistan cricket team held a short training camp in Lahore. Fast bowler Mohammad Amir is a doubt for the series as he remains with his wife in England where the couple is expecting the birth of their first child next week. With inputs from AP
