Glenn Phillips produced a moment of fielding genius in the ongoing New Zealand vs Australia Test match in Christchurch. In the 61st over of Australia’s first innings, Black Caps skipper Tim Southee sent a fastball wide past the off-stumps. Aussie batter Marnus Labuschagne cut the ball in response, sending it towards gully. Phillips watched the ball move towards him as he dived to his right, displaying remarkable agility. Stretching his body to the fullest, the all-rounder used his right hand to pluck the ball mid-air, dismissing Labuschagne for 90 runs.

The video was uploaded by TVNZ+ on X in a post that reads, “SUPERMAN! What a catch from Glenn Phillips! Australia are 221/8 at lunch on Day 2.”

The jaw-dropping catch from Glenn Phillips was followed by a passionate celebration. Having taken the catch, the Kiwi all-rounder got back to his feet and threw the ball up in joy after which he was joined by his teammates.

It ended Labuschagne’s over four hour long stay in the middle. Phillips had previously failed to impress during his side’s batting where he put up only two runs in eight balls. However, the all-rounder made a comeback in the second half, taking the wicket of Aussie wicketkeeper Alex Carey along with Labuschagne’s catch.

New Zealand faired quite poorly with the bat in the first innings, putting up a total of just 162 runs. Tom Latham had the best performance from his side as he scored 38 runs in 69 balls. Aussie pacer Josh Hazlewood dominated the Kiwi batters, scalping five of them. Mitchell Starc notched three in the same innings to keep the host side humble.

Australia were also troubled by New Zealand during their first innings as they lost Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja early. Black Caps pacer Matt Henry tore through the visitors’ batting order, scalping seven wickets. His impressive bowling performance saw him break the record for the best figures produced by a Kiwi bowler against Australia while playing at home. It also enabled the host side to prevent Australia from running away with a massive lead in the second Test, curbing them at a total of 256.

New Zealand currently lead the Christchurch Test by 40 runs at the end of Day 2. They will be hoping to pick up a victory against Australia to level their ongoing series 1-1.
