Gautam Gambhir was appointed the Indian cricket team’s new head coach on Tuesday, but the fun fact is that his salary has still not been decided by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It’s not a big surprise though. Gambhir is not the first India head coach to join without his salary being fixed.

The same was the case when Ravi Shastri joined the Men in Blue in 2014 as Director of Cricket and Gambhir’s predecessor Rahul Dravid extended his contract after the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Gambhir is currently negotiating his salary with the BCCI and it’s the same reason why his appointment as India coach was delayed . As per the latest reports, the former India opener is set to earn similar to what Dravid pocketed home as head coach.

“For Gautam, it was important that he took charge and salary and other stuff can be worked out as it’s not going anywhere. It is similar to the case of Ravi Shastri in 2014 when he was first made Director of Cricket over head coach Duncan Fletcher. The day Ravi joined, he didn’t even have a contract and things worked out. In case of Gautam also, some finer details are being worked out. The salary will be in the same range of Rahul Dravid,” BCCI source told news agency PTI.

Dravid earned around Rs 12 crore annually as head coach, the Indian Express reported a few days back, but Gambhir could be making a bit more.

There are other benefits that Gambhir will enjoy as well apart from a hefty salary.

The daily allowance per day during an away tour for an Indian coach is $250 (nearly Rs 21,000). Besides the daily allowance, the head coach will also be entitled to business class travel. His stay and laundry expenses will also be borne by the BCCI, as per a report in the Economic Times. Gambhir as India coach will be provided the best-in-class stay and travel arrangements.
