India registered their first-ever series win in Australia after the fourth and the final Test was washed out at the Sydney Cricket Ground. In this podcast, we discuss the historical significance of the win along with the biggest factor behind this victory. Nearly the last two days of play at Sydney were washed out because of rain with Australia in a lot of strife having been made to follow-on for the first time since 1988. However, their second innings lasted just four overs before it had to be called off as a light drizzle kept the two teams in the dressing rooms. This was after India had batted first and posted just their third score of 600 or over in Australia and then bowled the hosts out for 300, with Kuldeep Yadav picking up a five-for. Cheteshwar Pujara, who was later named the Man of the Match and the Man of the Series, led the way with an innings of 193 runs, while there was an unbeaten century for Rishabh Pant as well, his second in Test match cricket in just his ninth Test match. Earlier, India had gone 1-0 up by winning in Adelaide before losing in the second Test at the new Optus Stadium in Perth. But just when one thought Australia had found a way to start winning again, they were thoroughly outplayed by India in Melbourne, with rain having threatened to play spoilsport there too. And then going into this fourth Test, India nearly delivered the final blow, but rain had the final say. Still, India will gladly take a 2-1 series result given they had never won a series in Australia before this series.
