Aware of the situation, Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan and the rest of the team appealed to the umpires to give Mathews out via “Timed Out’ dismissal. While an animated Mathews did have a chat with the umpires, pleading his case, the umpires eventually gave the batter out.

Mathews was clearly miffed with his dismissal, and also threw away his helmet in frustration. What do the rules say? The official playing conditions of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 says that a batter shall be deemed “Timed Out” should he fail to be ready to face the ball within two minutes of the dismissal. 40.1.1 “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement.
