Dhoni speaks on his IPL future: 'Once auction rules are formalised, I will take a call'

MS Dhoni has said that any decision over his future as a player with Chennai Super Kings will be taken only after the rules for the next Indian Premier League (IPL) auction and player retention are decided.

“There is a lot of time for it,” Dhoni said at an event in Hyderabad. “We have to see what decision they take on player retention etc. Right now, the ball is not in our court.

“So, once the rules and regulations get formalised, I will take a call, but needs to be in the best interest of the team,” the 43-year-old added.

The BCCI had a meeting with IPL team owners on 31 July in Mumbai where the rules of IPL auction and player retention were discussed. No final decision has been disclosed so far and things are expected to become clear in the coming time.

Dhoni, who has retired from all forms of cricket, only plays in IPL for CSK. He has led the franchise to five titles and underwent knee surgery after winning the trophy in 2023.

He handed over CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad in the 2024 season but featured in all 14 matches for the franchise.

CSK finished fifth on the table with 14 points and missed out on a spot in the playoffs.

With growing age and knee issues, Dhoni was seen coming out to bat mostly in the death overs in IPL 2024. He smashed 13 sixes and 14 fours in the 73 balls he faced in the tournament earlier this year and scored at a strike rate of 220.55 – his best across 17 seasons of IPL.
