With no hope of winning the five-match Test series against India, the English cricket team entered the final game with pride to play for. The visitors’ outing in Dharamsala did not turn out to be quite fruitful as India won the game within just three days. With this victory, the Rohit Sharma-led side completed a 4-1 Test series win against England. The five-match contest against India also marked England’s first Test series defeat in the ‘Bazball’ era under captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum. The loss, needless to say, was quite devastating for England and the Dharamsala crowd also made fun of the visitors at one point during the fifth Test.

“Bazball gets battered everywhere they go,” supporters were heard chanting aiming at England batter Jonny Bairstow who was positioned close to the boundary ropes. Bairstow, who featured in his 100th Test in Dharamsala, initially decided not to respond but eventually reacted to the chants with a smile.

Bairstow came up with a solid knock of 39 in the second innings of the fifth Test but his batting was not enough to guide England to a win. England were bowled out for 195 in the second innings. Ravichandran Ashwin, who also took part in his 100th Test in Dharamsala, registered a five-wicket haul to help India earn a resounding victory by an innings and 64 runs for India.

Following the emphatic triumph against England, India skipper Rohit Sharma acknowledged the performance of the young players. “When you win a Test like this, everything has to fall in place. At some stage people are gonna and people are gonna come and we know that. These guys are maybe short of experience, they have played a lot of cricket and I can stand here and see that these guys responded pretty well under pressure. The credit goes to the entire team and it was pleasing to see,” Rohit said during the post-match presentation ceremony.

“When you win a series like this, we talk about scoring runs and 100s but it is important to take 20 wickets to win a Test. The way bowlers took responsibility was pleasing to see,” he added.

India’s Kuldeep Yadav was also in fine form in the fifth Test as he picked up five wickets in the first innings. Shubman Gill and Rohit were India’s star performers with the bat with each scoring a century. Young India batter Yashasvi Jaiswal was adjudged Player of the Series having scored 712 runs at an average of 89 in five Tests.
