Kasi Viswanathan, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) CEO has revealed that there have been discussions about succession planning post MS Dhoni’s stint. He also said that the former Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president and CSK owner N Srinivasan had asked to leave these decisions to the coach and captain. CSK will once again play this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL) under the captaincy of Dhoni. The IPL 2024 season is scheduled to start on March 22 and the reigning champions would want to identify a potential future captain for the side.
“See, there have been internal talks. But, Mr. Srinivasan has made it very clear. Let’s not talk about captain and vice-captain appointments. Let’s leave it to the coach and the captain to decide. Let them decide and convey the information to me, and then I will convey it to you all. He has said that ’the captain and the coach will decide and give us a directive, till then let’s all keep quiet’,” Viswanathan told S Badrinath in the latter’s YouTube show.
Dhoni had dispelled retirement rumors last year and said that he remains committed to the franchise for at least another season, considering it a gesture of gratitude towards the fans. The former Indian captain was struggling with a knee injury last season and after leading CSK to their fifth IPL title, he underwent knee surgery.
Dhoni arrived in Chennai during the first week of March and he has played an active role in CSK’s training sessions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. CSK will kick off their IPL 2024 campaign with a match against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
