Ruturaj Gaikwad is the new Chennai Super Kings captain but the cameras continue to pan towards MS Dhoni during the matches in this season’s Indian Premier League (IPL). A clip from CSK’s first match against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Chepauk has now gone viral. In the widely circulated video, Dhoni can be seen gesticulating and setting fields. This ignited a debate about whether Dhoni had retained his on-field captaincy despite officially passing the mantle to Gaikwad.
This footage also prompted some playful jabs from former cricketers like Virender Sehwag and Suresh Raina regarding CSK’s captaincy dynamics. Cameras spotted something similar once again during CSK’s recent match at home against Gujarat Titans. After CSK’s second consecutive win this season, Deepak Chahar was asked the same question about Dhoni’s involvement in the field placement.
Talking about the topic, Chahar said, “I got to look at Mahi [MS Dhoni] bhai and at Ruturaj - both of them these days for field placements and all. So there is a bit of a confusion where to look now but Ruturaj is doing well and he is leading the way.”
With consecutive victories at home, CSK will now head to Visakhapatnam where they will take on the Delhi Capitals on 31 March. They will then face the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on 5 April. The defending IPL champions have been quite emphatic in both their games so far.
