The ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy gets underway on Wednesday, 19 February, with hosts and defending champions Pakistan facing former champions New Zealand in the tournament opener at Karachi’s National Stadium. Team India begin their campaign a day later when they face Bangladesh at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, where they will be playing all of their Champions Trophy fixtures after refusing to travel to Pakistan.
South Africa and Afghanistan kickstart their campaigns when they lock horns in Karachi on Friday while Lahore hosts its first match of the tournament when two-time champions Australia face ‘Old Enemy’ England on Saturday. Sunday is when the blockbuster meeting between arch-rivals India and Pakistan takes place in Dubai.

The Champions Trophy, also known as the ‘Mini World Cup’, returns to action after a gap of nearly eight years. It was to be a biennial tournament for its first five editions between 1998 and 2006, and was supposed to be hosted by Pakistan in 2008, only for it to be delayed by a year and relocated to South Africa due to security concerns.
Champions Trophy then became a quadrennial event for its next two editions, taking place in 2013 and 2017 after Australia became the first team to win back-to-back titles in 2009. India won its second title in 2013 while Pakistan ended their reign four years later by thrashing them convincingly in the final at The Oval.
