While multiple media houses have reported that the International Cricket Council (ICC) will be hosting an emergency board meeting to bring an end to the Champions Trophy 2025 impasse, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has denied that they will be holding a virtual meeting with ICC and Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials. As per reports, the ICC board meeting will held virtually on 26 November with the main agenda being resolving the issues regarding the Champions Trophy 2025.
The Champions Trophy 2025 is to be held in Pakistan in February-March next year but India’s refusal to travel to their neighbours and Pakistan’s refusal to accept a Hybrid Model has put a temporary brake on Champions Trophy 2025 preparations. The ICC was also forced to delay the announcement of the schedule and is busy holding backchannel talks with the PCB to resolve the issues. The global cricketing body is also facing legal threats from broadcasters if India do not play against Pakistan in the Champions Trophy.
PCB denies meeting with ICC and BCCI
India have refused to travel to Pakistan due to security issues but PCB wants the BCCI to share its concerns in writing before they can suggest some solutions. Amid all the uncertainty the news of an ICC board meeting raised hopes but a PCB source has denied the reports of any such meeting taking place. “We have no information from the ICC about any meeting between us, BCCI and ICC,” a reliable PCB source told news agency PTI.
An ICC source, however, confirmed the meeting and added that it will be held virtually to discuss the Champions Trophy matters.
“It is a virtual meeting of the Executive Board members to resolve the issue of the Champions Trophy schedule once for all,” he said.
The ICC source added that the pressure from broadcasters could lead to a vote during the board meeting to resolve the issues. Voting can be used to decide the relocation of the tournament or host it in the Hybrid Model.
“There is a chance that there could be a vote on what to do and whether the event should be held — in Pakistan, relocate it or adopt the Hybrid Model as suggested by the BCCI with India playing its matches in the UAE,” he added.
