Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Rohit Sharma backs Shubman Gill to do well

“Gill is a very, very classy player. There was never a doubt about his ability in this squad. We tend to mix formats and I don’t think that’s the right way to judge any player. Certain players have their strength in certain formats and if one format doesn’t go well, it doesn’t mean that the other formats will be the same. It’s there for all of us to see what happened in Australia and things have changed certainly in a different format.”

“With Gill, we know the numbers are crazy. If you look at it, he has been superb for us in the last 3-4 years that he has batted. Obviously, there is a reason that he has been elevated to be the vice-captain of the team as well. Hopefully, he has a great tournament and it will eventually help us achieve the things that we are looking to achieve,” Rohit said at the press conference.

Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Poor cricket from Pakistan in front of home fans

Pakistan’s batting approach remained puzzling as they crawled to 70/3 in 22 overs, leaving themselves with a mountain to climb. With 251 runs needed from just 28 overs, the required rate has skyrocketed, putting immense pressure on the middle order. They needed to accelerate quickly but are struggling to break the shackles. Babar Azam is still alive.

Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Shane Watson picks India as favourite

“When it comes to the favourites, it has to be India. They have got bolstered with Hardik Pandya coming in as that fast bowling all-rounder. Unfortunately, they don’t have Jasprit Bumrah, but it’s just about the identical squad to what they had in the last one-day World Cup where they dominated up until the final,” Shane Watson said.

Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Eoin Morgan backs India to win the trophy

“To do the runners and riders, the side that’s the front-runner, best positioned across the squads, I would say India… out and out favourites,” Eoin Morgan said during the International Masters League’s Captain’s Day event on Wednesday.

“I can’t really pick any holes in their side. I know that’s been the case the last couple of tournaments they’ve gone into. Finally, (at) Ahmedabad, where Australia picked them, and then the T20 (World Cup) win, where they robbed the trophy out of the South African hands. You have to still believe that winning trophies and tasting champagne brings confidence, because once you’ve been there, you can believe that you can do it again, so that’s why India are the favourites,” added Morgan.

Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Pakistan suffer early setback

Pakistan suffered an early setback as Saud Shakeel was dismissed for 6 off 19 balls. William O’Rourke struck with a short-of-a-length delivery outside off, forcing an edge that flew to third man, where Matt Henry completed a brilliant diving catch. With Fakhar Zaman sidelined due to injury, Babar Azam and Shakeel had opened the innings, but Pakistan found themselves in early trouble. Mohammad Rizwan has now joined Babar in the middle.

Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Rohit addresses concerns about five spinners in squad

“We have two spinners and three all-rounders. I am not looking at them as five spinners. Jadeja, Axar, and Washi (Washington Sundar) give us a lot of depth. Many other teams carry six pacers when they have pace-bowling all-rounders. No one says they have one pacer too many. That’s their strength, and we focus on our strengths.” Rohit said at the pre-match press conference.

Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Kaif says Rohit should remain captain even if India don't win title

“What Rohit Sharma has achieved as a captain isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. He led India to the final of the 2023 World Cup. India did not play too many ODIs after that, and are now competing in the Champions Trophy. Even if God forbid India to underperform in the Champions Trophy, it is the coaches who are more likely to be in trouble, and not Rohit Sharma. Rohit Sharma will continue playing ODIs,” Mohammed Kaif said on Cricket With Kaif.

Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Naseem Shah breaks the partnership, Young departs

Naseem Shah dismissed Will Young with a well-directed length delivery, as Young attempted to play to the leg side. The shot didn’t get the desired elevation, and substitute fielder Faheem Ashraf, on for Haris Rauf, pulled off a brilliant catch at deep square leg. Young’s outstanding innings came to an end at 107 off 113 balls. His knock had been crucial in steadying New Zealand’s innings after early setbacks. New Zealand 191/4 in 37.2 Overs.

New Zealand’s Will Young etched his name in the 2025 Champions Trophy history books by becoming the first player to score a century in the tournament. Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Young and Latham need to score big

New Zealand started with promise, but as the innings progressed, it was clear that the older and softer ball was making stroke-making difficult. A target of 280-300 might be enough on this surface, but getting there won’t be easy. Apart from Will Young, most Kiwi batters have struggled to adapt. Tom Latham, who has given himself time at the crease, needs to convert his start into a big score. New Zealand 129/3 in 28 overs.

Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Pakistan strike again as New Zealand fail to rebuild

Pakistan take another wicket as New Zealand go three down. Haris Rauf bowled a hard length delivery, which proved too much for Daryl Mitchell, who tried to create room for a pull shot but was rushed by the pace. The ball cramped him for space, taking the top part of the bat and going to mid-on, where Shaheen Shah Afridi completed a simple catch. He goes for 10 off 24 balls. New Zealand 73/3 in 16.2 Overs.

Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Williamson falls early, New Zealand in trouble

In the 8th over, Abrar Ahmed struck to remove Devon Conway, and Naseem Shah followed up immediately by dismissing New Zealand’s legendary Kane Williamson in the very next over. Williamson departed for just 1 off 2 balls. Naseem delivered a back-of-a-length delivery, hitting the deck hard to extract movement away from the right-hander. Williamson, attempting a solid defensive stroke with a straight bat, found the edge. Rizwan took a sharp low catch. New Zealand 40/2 in 8.1 over.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of Day 1 of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, with hosts and defending champions Pakistan facing 2000 winners New Zealand in the tournament opener in Karachi.

Stay tuned for the latest updates on Match 1 as well as other developments from the tournament that returns to action after a gap of nearly eight years.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Highlights: The Champions Trophy finally returned to action on Wednesday, 19 February with Pakistan vs New Zealand clash as the opening game in Karachi. Wednesday’s clash marked the return of the ‘Mini World Cup’ after a hiatus of nearly eight years, and it will be followed by India’s opening game of the tournament – against Bangladesh in Dubai on Thursday.

Pakistan and New Zealand had faced each other twice recently – in the ODI triangular series also featuring South Africa in which the Black Caps emerged winners on both occasions, including the final . Pakistan have once again been defeated by New Zealand on their home soil with the record now extending to 3-0 in favour of the Kiwis.

Champions Trophy 2025: News  | Schedule  | Results  | Points Table

Both Pakistan and New Zealand have won the tournament once. The Men in Green are the defending champions, having won the 2017 edition in which a heavy defeat against India in the group stage had nearly knocked them out. However, they made a brilliant comeback in the final, defeating India by a huge margin of 180 runs.

New Zealand’s only Champions Trophy triumph too involved a victory over India in the final. All-rounder Chris Cairns’ century (102 not out) had overshadowed that of then-India captain Sourav Ganguly (117) as the Kiwis (265/6) ended up eclipsing India’s total (264/6) with two deliveries to spare to win the second edition by 4 wickets in the year 2000.
