Veteran India batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma face uncertain futures in international cricket following a horrendous outing during India’s tour of Australia recently, where they lost the Test series 1-3. BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, however, has said that the duo’s fate in international cricket will be decided after the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy that begins on 19 February.
‘We’ll see once Champions Trophy is done’: Agarkar on Rohit, Kohli futures
“It’s a month away from the Champions Trophy. These guys have been exceptional performers in one-day cricket… We’ll see once the Champions Trophy is done, we’ve got a bit more time to sit and assess where everyone is," Agarkar said at the press conference in Mumbai on Saturday, when he announced India's squad for the England ODIs as well as the Champions Trophy.
“Not just one of the players but where we go forward. But at the moment, the focus is on one-day cricket and Champions Trophy,” he added.
In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series, Rohit, who opted out of the first Test and was rested for the fifth, scored just 31 runs from three Tests at an average of 6.20. Kohli, on the other hand, had begun the series with an unbeaten century in Perth but lost the way soon after, aggregating just 190 runs from five matches at an average of 23.75.
In the aftermath of India’s forgettable tour of Australia, the BCCI has taken strict measures and have urged players to play domestic matches while not playing for India. Rohit confirmed that he will turn up for Mumbai in their Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir from 23 January. Kohli, however, has opted out of Delhi’s upcoming match against Saurashtra due to a neck injury, according to a report in Times of India.
India begin their Champions Trophy campaign against Bangladesh on 20 February in Dubai, before taking on Pakistan in the same venue three days later. There’s a six day break after that, with India facing New Zealand in their final group stage game on 2 March in Dubai.
