India, meanwhile, are the only team participating in the upcoming tournament that will be playing all of their matches at a neutral venue – Dubai to be more specific – after refusing to travel to Pakistan due to security concerns.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Ponting backs Arshdeep Singh ahead of Harshit Rana

Australian legend Ricky Ponting has picked Arshdeep Singh over Harshit Rana for India’s Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh.

“I would go with the left-armer and I’d go with Arshdeep (to replace Bumrah). We know how good he’s been in T20 cricket and if you think about the skill set, he probably provides a similar skill set to what Bumrah does with new ball and death overs and that’s what India will miss. That’s taking nothing away from Harshit Rana because I think he has got a lot of talent and we know what he can do with the new ball, but I don’t think his death skills are as good as what Arshdeep Singh’s are.”

“And just that left-arm variation, someone that can bowl left-arm with a new ball and move the new ball. We know how important they are and crucial they can be, especially in big tournaments when you’ve got a lot of right-handers at the top. I would personally lean that way if I was India.”

ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Dhawan expresses concern over Bumrah's absence

“I am quite confident about them, they have a solid team and played very well against England in their recent ODI series. My concern is they are going to miss Jasprit Bumrah, there is no doubt he will be a big absence and I think they will feel it very strongly. For me, he is the best bowler in the world, and his accuracy is hard to replicate. He is also a very calm character and that is crucial in a huge ICC event like this,” Dhawan wrote in his column for the ICC.

The BCCI had recently published its 10-point guidelines for the Indian cricket team in which it had stated that family members and partners could accompany players on overseas tours for up to two weeks for a trip consisting 45 or more days. ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Why isn't Jasprit Bumrah part of India's squad for the ICC Champions Trophy?

Senior India pacer Jasprit Bumrah isn’t just the face of India’s bowling unit, he’s also one of India’s greatest bowlers of all time, if not the best, and the best bowler across formats in the current generation. His absence comes as a massive blow to Team India’s hopes of winning the Champions Trophy for a third time, thereby becoming the most successful side in the tournament’s history.

Bumrah sits out of the ninth edition of the Champions Trophy due to a back injury that he had suffered in the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney. Given he is likely to take over as Test captain on a full-time basis later this year, the team management and selectors are likely being cautious about rushing him back to the highest level of the sport right away. ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Live Updates: Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the 2025 iCC Champions Trophy, which is set to get underway a little over 24 hours from now.

Hosts and defending champions Pakistan face 2000 winners New Zealand in the opening game of the tournament at Karachi’s National Stadium on Wednesday.

ICC Champions Trophy 2025 Highlights: The ninth edition of the ICC Champions Trophy is set to get underway exactly one day from now with hosts and defending champions Pakistan facing New Zealand in the tournament opener at Karachi’s National Stadium on Wednesday. Pakistan had won the ‘Mini World Cup’ for the first time after defeating India in the final of the 2017 edition at The Oval in London, and will be hoping to make full use of the home advantage in order to win back-to-back trophies.

India had nearly won consecutive editions of the Champions Trophy eight years ago, and will be backing themselves to regain the silverware nearly three weeks from now. They had won the tournament for the first time in 2002 when they shared the trophy with hosts Sri Lanka after the final got washed out on consecutive days. More than a decade later, they would pull off a thrilling victory over hosts England in a rain-curtailed final at Edgbaston.

And over the course of two-and-a-half weeks, Rohit Sharma’s men – who face Bangladesh in their opening game on Thursday – will be aiming to make India the most successful team in Champions Trophy by winning a third title. Should they win this tournament, it will be their second triumph in an ICC event in as many years, having won the T20 World Cup last June.
