Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan was left out after failing a bowling reassessment test in Chennai as Bangladesh unveiled their 15-man squad for next month’s ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. Shakib wasn’t the only senior left out of the Tigers’ squad though, with senior wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das also overlooked following a string of low scores, most recently in the tour of West Indies.
Shakib had announced his T20I retirement in September and was scheduled to play a farewell Test against South Africa in Mirpur in October, though he had to withdraw due to security concerns. The 37-year-old had recently indicated his desire to retire from international cricket in March; his exclusion from the Champions Trophy squad thus potentially brings the curtains down on his illustrious 18-year career.
Bangladesh also left out Afif Hossain, Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud from the 15-man squad captained by Najmul Hossain Shanto. Senior batter Tamim Iqbal, on the other hand, had confirmed his retirement from international cricket on Friday after being quizzed on his availability by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) selection committee.

Shanto, who leads Bangladesh across formats, had missed the winter tour of West Indies due to injury, as did senior wicketkeeper-batter Mushfiqur Rahim – who is set to keep wickets once again in Litton’s absence. Left-arm quick Mustafizur Rahman had also skipped the trip to the Caribbean to be with his wife for the birth of their child, and returns to the ODI setup along with Shanto and Mushfiqur.

While Bangladesh drew the Tests 1-1 and lost the one-day series 0-3, they signed off from the tour on a high with a 3-0 sweep of the T20I series.
