This has simply been a disappointing Test series for England in India. Despite winning the Test series opener, the Ben Stokes-led side failed to carry forward the momentum. The visitors ended up conceding the series 4-1 to India. The five-match outing against Rohit Sharma’s men also marked England’s first Test series loss under the captaincy of Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum. The defeat, needless to say, has put England’s Bazball approach under scrutiny and McCullum himself recently talked about his side’s unique style of gameplay. McCullum confessed that the Bazball style of play needs to be “more refined.”
“When you are exposed in the way we have been here, you know that you have to get better in some areas. The next couple of months will be us working out that and making sure when we come to the summer we are a more refined version of what we are at the minute,” McCullum was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.
“In the last two years we have done pretty well, to get from where we were to what we have got to now. We’ve discovered a lot about our side and the talent within English cricket. We’ve seen some guys who have really grown in that period of time. But we have to keep growing because there are many very skilled cricketers around the world and many very good cricket teams. If we stay where we are we’re not going to be good enough to be able to go toe-to-toe with them,” he added.
England did kick off the series against on a promising note with a 28-run win in Hyderabad. The hosts, however, scripted a prompt comeback to level the series in the next game with a resounding 106-run victory. India carried forward the momentum and clinched another emphatic win by 434 runs in the next fixture.
