Indian legend Sunil Gavaskar feels that Rohit Sharma will step down from captaincy at the end of the ongoing Test series against Australia if runs don’t come from his bat. Rohit has been struggling with poor form for a while now , having only scored 152 runs in the last 13 Test innings at an average of 11.83. His poor form has also coincided with Team India’s poor run in Test cricket, as they lost 3-0 at home against New Zealand and the ongoing five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy is currently tied 1-1 after three Tests.
“I think Rohit obviously will get the opportunity to play in the next couple of matches, that’s for sure. But maybe at the end of it, if he hasn’t scored runs, my feeling is that he himself will take the call,” Gavaskar said on ABC Sports.
‘Rohit is a very conscientious cricketer’
“He’s a very conscientious cricketer, he will not want to be a burden on the team,” Gavaskar added. “He’s a cricketer who cares very deeply for Indian cricket. So if he doesn’t score runs in the next couple of games, I think he himself will step down.”
Rohit’s teammate and India batter Cheteshwar Pujara, while speaking on Star Sports, said that the 37-year-old is paying the price for demoting himself to the No.6 slot. Rohit has been playing as an opener for a while in Test cricket but has sacrificed that spot for KL Rahul, who made a match-winning 77 in the opening Perth Test that India won by 295 runs and also scored a gritty 84 in the third Test at Brisbane.

That is for the team, but I still feel that when you are so much used to opening the innings and when you have to wait, then you put yourself in that doubt. I mean, it doesn’t help you when you’re opening the innings and you suddenly start batting at number 6,” Pujara said on Star Sports.
The fourth India vs Australia Test will be played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from 26 December.
