Australia suffered a humiliating defeat to India in the first Test at Perth’s Optus Stadium on Monday, and the Australian media minced no words in criticising Pat Cummins and Co. India, who were led by Jasprit Bumrah in Rohit Sharma’s absence, defeated Australia by 295 runs in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series opener in Perth , and this was after the visitors were bowled out for 150 in the first innings.
How Australian media reacted to Australia’s loss in first Test
Jasprit Bumrah registered figures of 5/20 in Australia’s first innings as the visitors saw off the hosts for 104. A report in the Sydney Morning Herald said that Australia “looked lost” throughout the match. “Australia, a team that prided itself on composure and clear thinking, has looked lost throughout, essentially from the moment Jasprit Bumrah destroyed their top order on the first evening of the game,” the report said.
The Sydney Morning Herald rated Yashasvi Jaiswal 10 out of 10 after the youngster’s maiden century Down Under. Jaiswal scored 161 runs in the second innings. The newspaper also lauded Bumrah’s captaincy. “Gave nightmares to Australia’s batters with his awkward bowling action and brilliant control of the seam to move the ball both ways. Grew visibly with the responsibility of captaincy,” the report added.

Virat Kohli roared back to form with his 30th Test century , and his first in the format for more than a year. “They had awoken Kohli from his batting slumber, an ominous sign of things to come,” Foxsports.com.au said.
Rating Marnus Labuschagne 1 out of 10, the Sydney Morning Herald wrote, “Bumrah is living inside Labuschagne’s head right now”. “One of the game’s best problem-solvers (Smith) will have to nullify Bumrah if Australia is to stand a chance in this series," added the newspaper. Bumrah had dismissed Labuschagne for three runs during Australia’s run-chase.
‘Perth-etic humiliation’
A headline on the Herald Sun newspaper read: “Perth-etic humiliation.” Nine.com.au termed it as a “monstrous loss” for the Aussies. “Aussies dealt reality check in monstrous loss,” read their headline.
Centuries from Kohli and Jaiswal powered India to a total of 487/6 in the second innings, a total which they declared. That meant Australia needed 534 runs to win, but the hosts were all out for 238 in their chase with Travis Head top-scoring with 89 runs.
