England all-rounder Ben Stokes on Wednesday registered his maiden World Cup century during his team’s league stage match against Netherlands in Pune. He then took only 20 further deliveries to get to his century, with a reverse sweep off Paul van Meekeren in the 48th over. Prior to this, a knock of 89 against South Africa in the 2019 World Cup was his previous best score in the showpiece tournament.
During his knock of 108 off 84 deliveries, Stokes amassed six fours and as many sixes. Stokes had announced retirement from ODIs in July 2022, but came out of retirement in August ahead of England’s World Cup defence. England, however, were officially eliminated from the World Cup following a defeat to Australia, after managing just one win in seven games so far.
