BCCI secretary Jay Shah has announced a new ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ for the senior Indian men’s cricket team with an aim to make Test cricket more attractive. The scheme was announced after India routed England by an innings and 64 runs at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala on Saturday to clinch the series 4-1.
“Commencing from the 2022-23 season, the ‘Test Cricket Incentive Scheme’ will serve as an additional reward structure on top of the existing match fee for Test matches, set at INR 15 lakhs,” Shah posted on X.
As per the table shared by Shah, the scheme will be applied from the 2022-23 season and a total corpus of Rs 40 crore has been announced for it. The scheme will reward those who feature in India’s playing XI in Tests regularly.
As per the calculation shared by Shah, players who have been part of the playing XI in more more than half of the Tests since the 2022-23 season will be paid double match fees. Currently the match fee for a Test is Rs 15 lakh. According to the calculation, if a player plays in five or six Tests in a nine-game season, he will make Rs 30 lakh per match as against Rs 15 lakh which was the match fee so far.
Matches Played | Assuming 9 Tests in a season | Playing XI incentive | Non-Playing XI incentive |
---|---|---|---|
Less than 50 percent | Less than 4 | Not applicable | Not applicable |
More than 50 percent | 5 or 6 | Rs 30 lakh per match | Rs 15 lah per match |
More than 75 percent | 7 or more | Rs 45 lakh per match | Rs 22.5 lakh per match |
If a player features in more than 75 percent of matches in a season then the match fee will shoot up to Rs 45 lakh per match. For those who are in non-playing XI, the incentive can be as high as Rs 22.5 lakh per match.
The Test Cricket Incentive Scheme comes after India cricketer Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer were seen ignoring Ranji Trophy cricket even in their time out of Team India. Kishan who took a break last year during the South Africa tour sighting ‘mental fatigue’ didn’t even make himself available for the Test team and was seen preparing for the IPL in Baroda along with Mumbai Indian captain Hardik Pandya.
Iyer also skipped Ranji Trophy after he was dropped from the Indian Test team due to poor form. He, however, returned for Mumbai during Ranji semis. Both Kishan and Iyer have been dropped from BCCI's central contracts for 2023-24 season.
