The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be holding a meeting with owners of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises in Mumbai on Wednesday (31 July). The main focus during the meeting could be on the Auction Purse, it has been reported.

Currently, the Auction Purse for each team is set at Rs 100 crore, but there are reports that it can be raised. If the Auction Purse is raised then we could see a lot of top names entering the auction to fetch a better value for their services.

Such is the enthusiasm to discuss the topic of Auction Purse that we could become the only point of discussion during the BCCI-IPL team owners meet, a report in CricketNext News18 said.

Impact Player rule will also be discussed in the meeting.

While cricket experts are not in favour of the rule, broadcasters and fans have nothing to complain about.

“Yes, the good all-rounders – Axar, Jadeja and others – continued to find a way in the XI but more options meant someone like Washington Sundar hardly played in 2024. So overall development of players like Washington Sundar was certainly impacted but at the same time, coaches had more options to play with.

Like beefing up batting or strengthening bowling as per the game requirement. Whatever was happening, the spectators and viewers weren’t complaining because the match wasn’t over even when it was 50/4 or 200/3,” a franchise official told CricketNext.

Retention rule

Another major point of discussion will be finalising the retention rule and how many players a franchise can retain ahead of the mega auction for IPL 2025.

The IPL teams who have done well over the past few years are reportedly in favour of raising retentions from three to five.

“The chatter will not stop because every team is in a different position before the 2025 season. Naturally, the ones who have done well want more and more retentions. But retentions undervalue the auction. And auction is an important part of the IPL ecosystem. In years to come, when the fan bases are well and truly cemented for all sides, it could well be a very transfer dominated ecosystem but as of now, auctions are important," a franchise offical said.

The ‘Right To Match’ (RTM) card quota will also be discussed during the meeting.
