BCCI earns Rs 377.49 crore from inaugural edition of Women's Premier League: Report

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly earned a revenue of Rs 377.49 crore from the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), that was held in Mumbai earlier this year. BCCI treasurer, Ashish Shelar, in his report during the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Goa on Monday, said that the revenue was inclusive of all five teams. According to an income analysis in Shelar’s report, six per cent of BCCI’s total income for the 2022-23 financial year came from the WPL. Further breakup of the revenues include 37 per cent share from the Indian Premier League (IPL), 38 per cent from media rights sale and 10 per cent from the senior men’s cricket team’s international tours. This is to bring to your notice that due to Covid 19, the cricketing season in 20-21 was cut down to only three tournaments. The domestic season of 2022-22 was at full strength except a few junior tournaments, like Under 16, etc. “However, the year 2022-23 brought back all the hopes and confidence to conduct the entire domestic season with enthusiasm. The baton handed over to me by my predecessors in a very healthy financial position, and I will make sure that it grows stronger as time passes… The BCCI has proved to the sports world how standards can be maintained in all situations,” Shelar informed state association members, as per a report in Times of India. “The baton handed over to me by my predecessors in a very healthy financial position and I will make sure that it grows stronger as time passes to see in a position and where the BCCI stands today is a result of collective effort by all the ex and present officials. The broad horizon of vision in the form of leadership along with strong commitment of all members of the BCCI has taken the sport of cricket to such a respectable height in a span of very few years. “The dedication and determination put in by the BCCI has made sure that the BCCI remains ethically and financially strong at all times. The BCCI has proved to the sports world how standard can be maintained in all situations (sic),” he added in his report. The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League was held in Mumbai between 4 March and 26 March this year with five teams —Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Giants, taking part. Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians won the title, beating Delhi Capitals by seven wickets in the final.
