After taking stringent actions against Indian cricket team players, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has now reportedly taken action against head coach Gautam Gambhir by denying permission to travel with the national side for his personal assistant (PA). The BCCI cracked the whip against Gambhir and his personal assistant Gaurav Arora after receiving complaints about the PA accessing areas which are meant only for Team India officials, selectors and players.
The BCCI’s decision to act against Gambhir’s personal assistant is inspired by the cricket board’s interest in upholding professional boundaries, reported CricBlogger. Gaurav Arora’s accessing areas designated only for team officials had raised questions about his role as reportedly it was felt that he wasn’t needed when Gambhir has direct access to players, selectors and officials.
BCCI bars Gambhir’s PA from Team India hotel, bus
A BCCI source also told CricBlogger that permission to Gaurav Arora was denied after protest from other office-bearers. Gaurav Arora reportedly had access to selectors’ cars, the BCCI’s hospitality box in Adelaide and restricted breakfast zones in team hotels. These areas are usually reserved for Indian players and officials.
“In response, the BCCI has barred Gambhir’s PA from staying in the same hotel as the Indian team, accessing VIP boxes in stadiums, and using the team bus. He can’t travel with the team,” the BCCI source said. This move is part of a broader initiative by the BCCI to regulate the presence of personal staff and family members during tours. The board has reintroduced a policy limiting the duration that family members can accompany players on tours."
Last month BCCI had released a 10-point diktat for Team India after a disastrous tour of Australia where they lost the Test series 3-1. In damage control mode, BCCI made domestic cricket mandatory for centrally contracted players and restricted family time on overseas tours.
