Pakistan’s Babar Azam has become the fastest batter to notch 10,000 runs in T20 cricket. Babar achieved this feat during a Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2024 match between Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Wednesday. Babar scored 72 runs off 51 deliveries to reach the milestone in 271 innings. The star Pakistan batter surpassed the previous record held by West Indies’ Chris Gayle (285 innings). Virat Kohli claims the third spot on this elite list of batters having breached the 10,000 run-mark in 299 T20 innings. Despite Babar’s brilliance with the bat, Peshawar conceded a seven-wicket defeat at the hands of Karachi.
“I’m happy with my personal form though, happy to have got past 10,000 career runs,” Babar Azam said after the match.
Former Pakistan skipper and Karachi all-rounder Shoaib Malik also lavished immense praise on Babar for setting the new record. “Big congrats to him, we all know that he is very consistent and I wish him all the luck. Keep playing like this and win games for Pakistan, that’s all I can say,” Shoaib said.
Batting first, Peshawar posted 154 runs. Peshawar skipper Babar was the highest scorer for his side during the game against Karachi. Babar’s power-packed knock comprised seven boundaries and one six. For Karachi, Hasan Ali and Mir Hamza picked up three wickets each.
Karachi, during the run chase, scored the winning runs with 19 balls to spare. James Vince produced a sublime unbeaten knock of 38 off 30 deliveries to guide his side to a convincing seven-wicket win. Hamza was awarded the Player of the Match for his match-winning bowling figures of 3/28.
With this defeat, Peshawar remain stranded at the bottom of the PSL 2024 points table. Having played two matches so far, the Babar’s men have not yet succeeded in registering a victory. Karachi, on the other hand, find themselves at the fourth spot with two points from as many games. The win against Peshawar also marked their maiden victory of this season’s PSL. In their next match, Karachi will be up against Lahore Qalandars on Saturday, February 24.
