Despite Australia losing the last two Test series at home against India, Pakistan Test coach and former pacer Jason Gillespie is confident that the Aussies can beat India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy later this year. Both in 2018-19 and 2020-21, India won the four-match Test series 2-1 with the first one being their first-ever Test series win Down Under.

Gillespie feels that Australia’s pace bowling trio of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc along with off-spinner Nathan Lyon can help the hosts break the drought and inspire Australia to their first Test series win over India in a decade.

“I will be backing them to do the job. They are the best bowlers in the country. I think their records speak for themselves. This quartet is the best possible bowling attack that Australia can put out in the park,” Gillespie told Fox Cricket.

“They are red-hot, they are playing some good test cricket for a while now. Even though they have beaten Australia in recent times, I think Australia have a chance to beat India this time around,” he added.

Gillespie also feels that Steve Smith could return to his usual middle-order spot of No.4 in the India series. Smith took the opener’s slot that was left vacant after David Warner’s retirement but that experiment has not proved to be successful yet.

“Players like David Warner are pretty tough to replace. I didn’t mind the idea of Steve Smith going up in the order. I have a feeling that he might have slot back in the middle order to bat at 4,” Gillespie added.
