Ajinkya Rahane proved he remains fit as ever and that age is just a number with a superb effort to pull off a relay catch with Rachin Ravindra during the opening game of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) between Chennai Super Kings
And it was none other than Virat Kohli who was the batter dismissed thanks to Rahane’s superhuman effort near the midwicket boundary, the batting superstar attempting to pull a slower delivery from CSK left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman but unable to manufacture enough power on the shot for it to clear the fence.

Rahane had been running in the opposite direction while keeping his eyes fixed on the ball while Rachin had been running to his left from deep square leg. The 35-year-old managed to grab hold of the ball after putting in a slide, but was alert enough to throw it towards Rachin just when his foot was about the touch the advertising cushion.

While the catch was officially credited to Rachin, there’s little doubt about the fact that this was Rahane’s catch in every sense of the word. Rachin, however, did have his little moment earlier in the day as he made an instant impact after making his IPL debut alongside uncapped Indian batter Sameer Rizvi.

More ShortsThe New Zealand batting all-rounder, who had a heroic run in the ICC World Cup last year, had put in a slide near sweeper point to bring RCB skipper Faf du Plessis’ whirlwind innings to an end after the South African got the Royal Challengers off to a flying start. Du Plessis would depart for a 23-ball 35 as a result, bringing the opening partnership worth 41 to an abrupt end in the fifth over.
Meanwhile, Kohli added another feather to his cap in what was otherwise a relatively unimpressive 21 off 20 deliveries, becoming the first Indian cricketer and the sixth overall to go past the 12,000-run mark in T20 cricket.
Mustafizur would finish the pick of CSK’s bowlers with figures of 4/29 from his quota of four overs. The Bangladesh pacer had struck twice in each of his first two overs, dismissing Rajat Patidar as well as Cameron Green besides Faf and Kohli with his figures reading 2-0-7-4 in the 12th over.
RCB were reduced to 78/5 as a result of his four-fer before a blazing sixth-wicket stand between Anuj Rawat (48) and keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik (38 not out) helped the Royal Challengers recover from the collapse and post a challenging 173/6 on the board.
