After serving the game as a cricketer for almost two decades and then as the president of the BCCI, Sourav Ganguly has now decided to put on coaching shoes. The former Indian cricketer has been appointed as the head coach of Pretoria Capitals for the SA20 2026 season.
Ganguly, who has mentored IPL outfit Delhi Capitals in the past, will replace Jonathan Trott as head coach of Pretoria Capitals, a franchise of JSW Sports, the same company that owns DC in partnership with GMR. Notably, Ganguly had been serving as the director of cricket for JSW Sports since last year.
Sourav Ganguly becomes the head coach of Pretoria Capitals
“The Prince is all set to bring a royal flair to the Capitals camp! We are ecstatic to announce Sourav Ganguly as our new head coach,” Pretoria Capitals wrote in an Instagram post on Sunday, August 24.
Pretoria Capitals have suffered from inconsistency in the SA20 tournament. They finished at the top of the table in the inaugural season, but lost the final to Sunrisers Eastern Cape. In the subsequent two seasons, they finished in 5th position both times, failing to qualify for the playoffs.
With Ganguly at the helm, Pretoria Capitals hope that the team will at least advance to the playoff stage this time. While Ganguly has considerable leadership experience, this will be his first time as a head coach. Ganguly’s first task with the team will be to sign utility players during the SA20 player auction on September 9.
Ganguly’s impressive resume as leader
Besides captaining Team India from 2000 to 2005, Ganguly was the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal from 2015 to 2019. He took on the mentorship role with Delhi Capitals in 2019, but left the franchise soon after to become the president of the BCCI.
Last year, Ganguly took on the role as JSW’s director of cricket, a move that pushed him closer to becoming a coach of one of JSW’s franchises. As it happened, he is now the coach of Pretoria Capitals.
