Smriti Mandhana played the innings of her life in the third ODI between India and Australia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Saturday, September 20. In the process, she also broke Virat Kohli’s long-standing ODI record. Mandhana scored 125 off 63 balls but failed to help India win the match.
Mandhana breaks Kohli’s record
Mandhana, however, became the fastest Indian, male or female, to score a century in One-Day Internationals. The left-handed opener smashed a 50-ball hundred, going past Kohli’s 52-ball century against the same opponents in Jaipur back in 2013. Kohli had held the record for over 12 years, but now it belongs to Mandhana.
Mandhana, who already held the record for the fastest ODI century by an Indian woman (70 balls), also overtook former Australian Karen Rolton’s 57-ball effort from 2001. She now stands second in women’s cricket, behind Meg Lanning’s 45-ball hundred against New Zealand in 2012.
Mandhana is also the first woman batter to make four ODI hundreds in a single year as she had achieved the feat in 2024. Tazmin Brits of South Africa is the other batter to achieve this feat. She has also become only the second batter to score successive hundreds in women ODIs twice after Tammy Beaumont of Australia. New Zealand’s Amy Satterthwaite holds the record for most consecutive hundreds in women’s ODI with four tons in a row in 2016-2017.
The 29-year-old’s knock was a mix of 17 fours and five sixes. With Harmanpreet Kaur adding a fine 52 and Deepti Sharma scoring 72, India looked well on track in their massive chase of 413. But Mandhana’s dismissal turned the tide. India’s innings eventually ended at 369 in 47 overs, falling short by 43 runs.
Australia’s Beth Mooney was the star for the visitors, smashing 138 off just 75 balls with 23 boundaries. She was well supported by Georgia Voll (81) and Ellyse Perry (68), as the Aussies piled up their joint-highest ODI total of 412 in 47.5 overs. This defeat also means that India lost the series 2-1.
