Shubman Gill added another feather to his cap on the opening day of the fifth and final Test against England , surpassing the record for most runs in a Test series by an Indian captain. The record had belonged to the legendary Sunil Gavaskar for more than four decades until Gill surpassed him by scoring 11 runs on Day 1 of the final Test at The Oval.
Gavaskar had scored 732 runs in nine outings across six Tests against West Indies in 1978-79, collecting four centuries and a fifty along the way. Gill, on the other hand, has scored 737 runs so far in the current series, which also includes four centuries.
Gavaskar, additionally, had registered an average of 91.50 in that series against the Alvin Kallicharran-led West Indies, which is nearly identical to what Gill is averaging in the current series (92.12).
Gill had earlier surpassed Virat Kohli's tally of 655 runs , also in a five-match series against England, albeit at home in 2016, en route to his knock of 103 in the second innings at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Gill steers India to safety along with Sudharsan at The Oval
The 25-year-old was batting on 15 at lunch on the opening day with B Sai Sudharsan on 25 for company, as India reached 72/2 at end of the morning session. India had lost the wickets of openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (2) and KL Rahul (14) after losing the toss for the 15th consecutive time in international cricket.
Pacer Gus Atkinson, making his first appearance in the ongoing series, trapped Jaiswal leg-before in the fourth over of the day after skipper Ollie Pope, filling in as captain for the injured Ben Stokes, opted to bowl. Jaiswal, whose form has gradually tapered this series after a century in the series opener at Headingley, burned a review on his way back to the pavilion.
Rahul, who had scored 90 in India’s heroic batting effort at Old Trafford to force a draw, joined him in the dressing room shortly after chopping the ball onto the stumps off Chris Woakes’ bowling.
