Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has officially been ruled out of the second Test against South Africa, and his whole travel plan earlier this week has now become a big talking point. Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test in Kolkata and was hospitalised, still travelled with the squad to Guwahati. It was said that the skipper’s presence would help lift the team’s morale, even if he didn’t play.
Gill released from Test squad
But now the BCCI has announced that Gill has been released from the squad and has flown to Mumbai “for further assessment of his injury.” This has left everyone asking why Gill was taken to Guwahati in the first place when he was not fit. Many feel that this whole trip to Guwahati was unnecessary and could have been avoided because it might have added to his injury.

Am told even ODIs touch and go?
Gill was hurt on Day 2 of the opening Test in Kolkata and was taken to the hospital for treatment. The 26-year-old was discharged the next day, even though he was still not fully fit. Despite this, he travelled with the team on November 19, but did not train or take part in any match preparations. A day before the start of the 2nd Test, the BCCI released Gill from the squad.
Meanwhile, the injury has also raised doubts about Gill’s participation in the upcoming ODI series against the Proteas. Gill is the captain of the 50-over side. There are reports that doctors have advised him to take rest for at least 10 days. The first ODI is scheduled to take place on November 30, which means that Gill might have to miss out on the white-ball series as well.
Meanwhile, Rishabh Pant will captain India in the second Test in the absence of Gill. India will look to win the match and level the series 1-1. A loss would mean another historic home Test series defeat for Gautam Gambhir’s team. India lost the first Test by 30 runs, giving South Africa their first red-ball victory on Indian soil in 15 years.
