India captain Shubman Gill has given a positive update on Rishabh Pant’s fitness after the wicketkeeper-batter picked up a minor injury during the third Test against England at Lord’s. Speaking at the post-match press conference, Gill confirmed that Pant went for scans but there is nothing serious.
Shubman Gill on Rishabh Pant’s injury status
Pant injured his index finger on his left hand while attempting to collect a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah during the 34th over of England’s first innings. At first, he was given medical attention on the field but when that didn’t help, he was taken off the field. Dhruv Jurel replaced him as wicketkeeper for the rest of the match.
“Rishabh went for scans. There is no major injury so he should be fine for the fourth Test in Manchester,” Gill said.
Pant, however, came to bat and scored a crucial 74 in the first innings before getting run out at a crucial juncture in the match. Even England captain Ben Stokes admitted that Pant’s run-out was a big moment. Pant was trying to help KL Rahul reach his century before lunch on Day 3 when Stokes effected the dismissal.
“We talk a lot about this keeping the team’s interest ahead of personal milestones. But I think it was an error of judgment, rather than wanting to score 100 runs. I think he said it would be better if he scored 100 runs before the lunch. A batsman feels pressure at 99 runs," Gill said.
“But at the end of the day, I don’t think it was personal and he got run out because of his personal milestone. It was an error of judgment. Rishabh made the call. KL Bhai was running at the danger. I would say it was an error of judgment. It can happen to any batsman," he added.
The fourth Test between India and England will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester from 23 to 27 July. India are trailing 2-1 in the five-match series after their narrow 22-run defeat at Lord’s . Pant’s availability will be a big boost for the visitors as they look to level the series.
