The BCCI released an update on Gill's health last afternoon, saying that the Indian skipper is being monitored by their medical team and a decision on his participation will be taken as per his progress. Gill did not come out to bat in the first innings as India were bowled out for 189 runs, after just 30-run lead.

After the end of the day’s play, Indian bowling coach Morne Morkel revealed that Gill had woken up with a stiff neck last morning. He said that another partnership was needed at the time when Gill got injured, and called it “just bad timing.”

Indian bowlers have reduced South Africa to 93/7 in the second innings and will look to bowl them out in the first session itself. Axar Patel said last evening that they will need to stop the Proteas under 125 to win the first Test in Kolkata.
