Gill registers big record on captaincy debut
With this innings, Gill also became the ninth Indian player to score 50 or more in his first innings as Test captain. At 25 years and 285 days, he is now the youngest Indian among those nine to do so.
Gill, along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, is putting on a masterclass at Headingley as India continue to dominate the second session. The pair has stitched together a solid unbeaten partnership of over 100 runs after early setbacks, with Jaiswal hitting a well-deserved fifth Test century and Gill cruising past his fifty.
At the time of writing this story, Jaiswal is batting on 100 off 144 balls with 16 boundaries and a six, while Gill is unbeaten on 57 off 72 balls, scoring at an impressive strike rate of over 80. India are rebuilding well after lunch break.
Earlier, KL Rahul scored 42 off 78 balls before getting out to Brydon Carse. Debutant Sai Sudharsan faced 4 balls before nicking one off Ben Stokes for a duck.
