The much-awaited play-off stage of the Duleep Trophy has begun, and barring West Zone and South Zone, who are already in the semi-final of the tournament, all the other teams are embroiled in a mega clash. While high-level cricketing action is set to unfold, fans may notice the absence of some prominent names, especially when it comes to first-choice captains.
The list of captains who are not featuring in the quarter-finals of the tournament includes Central Zone skipper Dhruv Jurel, East Zone captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, and North Zone captain Shubman Gill.
Jurel, Easwaran, and Gill not featuring in play-offs
According to a report published by The Times of India, Jurel picked up a groin injury on the eve of the match against the North East Zone and was asked to skip the match by the selectors. As Jurel is part of the reserves for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, the selectors don’t want to take any risks.
Moreover, following the Asia Cup, India will play four Test matches at home, and with Rishabh Pant injured, Jurel’s services as wicket-keeper batsman could be required, the report further stated.
Meanwhile, Abhimanyu Easwaran, who patiently waited for his chance in the England series but had to return without any playing time, has caught the flu on the morning of the match, as per the same report.
It is a major setback for Easwaran as he was looking to make a mark in the domestic circuit after spending the entire England tour warming the bench.

View AllThe TOI report states that Gill is also sidelined by the flu for the North Zone’s clash against the East Zone. Gill’s blood test reportedly showed no major concerns, and the player is expected to join the team in Bengaluru later this week before heading to the Asia Cup 2025.
These absences have led to leadership changes, with Rajat Patidar taking over Central Zone, Riyan Parag leading East Zone, and Ankit Kumar captaining North Zone, setting the stage for new talents to shine.
