Shubman Gill had a dream start to his Test captaincy career as he smashed a brilliant century on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Leading India in a Test match for the very first time, Gill showed maturity and reached his hundred in style with a boundary off Josh Tongue in the 75th over.

The 25-year-old became only the fourth Indian captain to score a century in his debut innings as Test captain, joining a legendary list that includes Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli. This is Gill’s sixth Test hundred and perhaps the most special of them all, considering the occasion.
Centuries on captaincy debut in Tests for India:
164* - Vijay Hazare vs England, Delhi 1951
116 - Sunil Gavaskar vs New Zealand, Auckland 1976
115 - Virat Kohli vs Australia, Adelaide 2014
110* - Shubman Gill vs England, Headingley 2025
Gill leads from the front as India eye big total
Gill is batting on 110 off 143 balls, with 14 fours and one six and is showing no signs of slowing down. He also found great support from vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who is currently unbeaten on 43 off 78 balls. The duo has stitched together a strong partnership and taken India to a solid total of 318/3 in 76 overs.
Earlier in the day, Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a brilliant 101, while KL Rahul added a steady 42. Though debutant Sai Sudharsan fell early, India have dominated the first day thanks to strong performances from the top order. India are in a commanding position, and if Gill and Pant continue in the same way, a big first-innings total looks very likely.
